A method is disclosed for displaying and confirming the status of a plurality of deferred requests for processing by a system made by an end user of that system. Each request made by an end user is monitored and an indication of each deferred request is stored in a deferred status request list which acts as an electronic 'out basket.' The deferred status request list includes an indication of the date and time of each request as well as an indication of the type of request. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention an indication of the status of each deferred request is periodically generated and stored within the deferred status request list so that the end user may determine whether or not the request is pending, running, or completed. The end user may also selectively view the deferred status request list and alter the status of a selected request by deleting it, placing it in a hold status, or viewing the results of that request.

A data processing system for notifying the user of a terminal attached to a host processor of the occurrence of an asynchronous event affecting the user. The notification system determines whether or not the user is in communication with the host processor and then generates and displays an icon, or other selectable graphic representation of the asynchronous event at the user's terminal. Selection of the graphic representation by the user will display additional details of the asynchronous event to the user at his or her terminal. In one embodiment of the present invention, an indication of the asynchronous event is stored at the host processor if the user is not in communication with the host processor and displayed to the user after communication is initiated.

A method for classifying and accessing a collection of documents as a single document entity. Relationships are formed between the collection of documents in a relational manner. Each individual document relationship is assigned a document relationship classification independent of the document. The relationship classification contains sensitivity attributes in addition to specific information which relates the documents to a part of a particular set. Access to documents is based on the requester's credentials as well as a calculated relationship classification based on the sensitivity attributes.

A method allows for the communication of an electronic message between an enrolled user linked to a computer network and an unenrolled recipient. A recipient is designed for delivery of an electronic message from an enrolled user of a computer network. It is determined if the designated recipient is an enrolled user in the computer network. Then, in the event the designated recipient is not an enrolled user of the computer network, it is determined automatically whether the designated recipient has a designated intermediary linked to the computer network for receipt of the electronic message. The electronic message is directed from the enrolled user through the computer network to the unenrolled recipient in care of the designated intermediary.

A method is disclosed for providing a user dependent status indication for shared electronic mail objects within a distributed computing system. In certain electronic mail systems multiple users are permitted to share access to selected electronic mail objects in a so-called 'affinity' relationship whereby selected end users are permitted to access identical address space within a computer. Within such systems it is difficult to ascertain a particular status of a selected electronic mail object with certainty due to the face that multiple users may have access to that electronic mail object. In accordance with the method of the present invention an attribute list is associated with each electronic mail object which may contain multiple sets of attributes, each set associated with a group of recipients, a subgroup of recipients or an individual end user having access to that electronic mail object. Thereafter, the activities of each end user are utilized to modify each attribute list associated with that end user. An end user may then periodically determine and display the status of an individual mail object with regard to the entire group of recipients, a subgroup of recipients or an individual end user.

Method for notifying a terminal user of an asynchronous event occurrence

A method is disclosed for notifying both the source and intended recipient of a classified electronic message transmitted via a computer network of a delivery restriction imposed by an insufficient classification level at the recipient's system. A required classification level is transmitted by the source of a classified electronic message in association with each classified electronic message in an indication of each classified electronic message is stored in an output log at the source system. Prior to permitting delivery of a classified electronic message, the required classification level is then compared to the classification level of the intended recipient. Delivery of a classified electronic message is automatically restricted in response to an insufficient classification level at the recipient's system and a status message is then transmitted to either or both the source and the intended recipient of the classified electronic message. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the recipient is automatically prompted to attempt to obtain a classification upgrade or forward the message to an alternate recipient in response to such restriction. Additionally, the method of the present invention permits an undelivered message to be destroyed by the source, the recipient, or the system in response to the failure of delivery.
