In a camera adapted to receive a disc-shaped magazine and including a housing with front and rear walls having a lens window exposed on the front wall near one side margin of the housing and front and rear viewfinder windows exposed on the front and rear walls on the same side of the housing as the lens window, a hollow handle is provided having spaced front and rear walls defining therebetween an open housing side-receiving recess. The handle is much narrower than the width of the housing so as to fit over only the side of the housing containing the lens and viewfinder windows. The handle is mounted on the housing for movement between a stable, releasable retracted position where the handle recess receives the latter side of the housing therein so that the front and rear handle walls cover the lens, and front and rear viewfinder windows, and at least one stable, releasable extended position where the handle projects downwardly and laterally outwardly where it can be readily grasped by the hand corresponding to the side of the camera where the lens window is located, so that the user cannot conveniently grasp the adjacent side of the housing inadvertently to cover the lens window near the margin thereof.

A camera for receiving a cartridge containing relatively high or low speed films has an adjustable aperture mechanism for regulating the amount of light exposing the film, and a manual control mechanism operatively associated therewith and movable between 'sunny', 'cloudy' and 'flash' settings to provide respectively 'small', 'intermediate' and 'large' apertures for high speed film. The cartridge includes structural means thereon of a predetermined configuration in accordance with the speed of the film contained therein. An automatic control mechanism operatively associated with the adjustable aperture mechanism senses the structural means on the cartridge to increase the 'small' aperture to the 'intermediate' aperture and the 'intermediate' aperture to the 'large' aperture for low speed film without changing the settings of the manual control mechanism.

A film advancing mechanism comprises a planetary gear train including preferably an annular film winding gear having internal teeth meshing with an eccentrically mounted gear carried by a drive gear which rotates in one direction and the other as a manually operable film winding member is moved back and forth. A sun gear carried by a rotatable slip clutch-forming member meshes with the eccentric gear. The slip clutch-forming member forms a slip clutch with a ratchet wheel held against rotation in one direction by a locking pawl so that the sun gear is normally locked against rotation when the film winding member is moved in the winding direction. When the sun gear is locked in position, bodily movement of the eccentrically mounted gear on the drive gear drives the annular film winding gear. When a film metering pawl enters a metering aperture of the film, a pawl locks the annular gear against further rotation. When the annular gear is so locked by the pawl or by the film unwinding completely from its supply spool, the sun gear-carrying member can slip or move with respect to the ratchet wheel, so that continued movement of the manually operable film winding member can take place.
