A vehicle wireless unit and a method of operating the same. The vehicle wireless unit and method may be used to temporarily halt a non-interrupted data flow between the vehicle wireless unit and a cellular network over a first cellular link according to a first radio access technology (RAT), which purposely causes the vehicle wireless unit to enter an idle mode and results in the first cellular link being released. Once the first cellular link is released, the vehicle wireless unit and method may search for and, if found, establish a second cellular link with the cellular network according to a higher-order radio access technology (RAT). The vehicle wireless unit and method may be particularly useful with autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles.

Vehicle wireless unit and method of operating the same

Methods, systems, and vehicles are provided for controlling an automated system of a vehicle. In one example, the vehicle includes one or more automated driving systems, a plurality of position determining systems, and a processor. The processor is coupled to the one or more automated driving systems and the plurality of position determining systems, and is configured to at least facilitate determining a current position of the vehicle using an operational mode comprising one or more of the position determining systems, operating the one or more automated driving systems in an automated mode, without driver intervention, if the operational mode includes use of both satellite provided position data in addition to satellite correction data, and operating the one or more automated driving systems in a manual mode, with driver intervention, if the operational mode does not include use of both satellite provided position data in addition to satellite correction data.

Operating modes for autonomous driving

Methods, systems, and vehicles are provided for controlling an automated system of a vehicle. In one example, the vehicle includes one or more automated driving systems, a plurality of input systems, and a processor. The plurality of input systems are used in connection with the vehicle, and are configured to provide inputs. The processor is coupled to the plurality of input systems, and is configured to at least facilitate: estimating a current position of the vehicle using the inputs from the plurality of input systems generating a current position estimate, estimating an error for the current position estimate, the error comprising an expected error radius for the current position estimate, and controlling the one or more automated driving systems using the current position estimate and the expected error radius.
