A health signature of each switching device in a control system is estimated using system parameters such as a DC-link voltage, three-phase voltages, three-phase currents, and temperature. The switching devices can be implemented as transistors, and a health signature for each transistor may be an on-state resistance or an on-state voltage of the transistors. For example, the on-state resistance for a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) functions as a health signature. Alternatively, the on-state voltage is used as a health signature for an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). Additionally, a junction temperature is estimated for each transistor. Using the estimated health signatures and the junction temperatures, the remaining useful life of each transistor is estimated.

Estimation of life of switching devices

Arc fault detection modules for vehicles intended to supervise circuits and detect arc fault conditions in both alternating current and direct current circuits. A number of these arc fault detection modules may be integrated into a vehicle's electrical system in strategic locations. Each arc fault module contains sensing capabilities for monitoring the circuit, and may also include signal conditioning capabilities, processing capabilities for determining the occurrence of an arc fault, contactors for disabling the supervised circuit, and communications capabilities to interact with other vehicle components and telematics systems. As a result arc fault detection odules can be customized to leverage existing features of a vehicle's electrical system or to provide fully redundant arc fault protection.

Arc fault detection modules for vehicle electrical systems

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for detecting a winding fault and the winding fault severity in a brushless direct current motor before motor failure. Methods for detecting a winding fault include time domain based sequence component analysis, fast Fourier transform analysis, or Hilbert analysis. Methods for detecting the severity of a winding fault include analysis of the standard deviation of real mean squared values determined using motor currents.

Motor winding fault diagnosis

A method of monitoring an electrical system may include providing a ground fault detection unit, operating a transformer rectifier unit to provide DC power to a load, sensing, via a current sensor, a ground current at or about an output of the transformer rectifier, and/or monitoring a sensor output from the current sensor via the ground fault detection circuit. The ground fault detection circuit may be configured to detect ground faults at frequencies of at least 30 kHz.

Electrical system

An electrical system includes a ground fault detection unit including a low frequency ground fault detection circuit and a high frequency ground fault detection circuit, and/or a ground fault control unit connected to the low frequency ground fault detection circuit and the high frequency ground fault detection circuit. The ground fault unit may be configured to detect a ground fault according to an output of the low frequency ground fault detection circuit and/or an output of the high frequency ground fault detection circuit. The electrical system may include a first current sensor connected to the low frequency ground fault detection circuit and/or a second current sensor connected to the high frequency ground fault detection circuit.

An AC arc fault detection module includes an LF current section, an LF voltage section, and an HF current section having a plurality of outputs, each output being associated with a respective one of a plurality of frequency sub-bands. The HF current section is structured to, for each of the frequency sub-bands, (i) detect a rise in energy of the frequency sub-band above a first predetermined threshold level for at least a certain amount of time and (ii) cause the associated output to indicate a rise in energy detection in response to detecting the rise in energy above the associated threshold level for at least the associated certain amount of time. The module includes a processing device structured to determine whether an AC arc fault has occurred based on the outputs from the LF and HF current and LF voltage sections.

Arc fault detection system and method and circuit interrupter employing same

A DC arc fault detection module includes an LF current section, an LF voltage section, and an HF current section having a plurality of outputs, each output being associated with a respective one of a plurality of frequency sub-bands. The HF current section is structured to, for each of the frequency sub-bands, (i) detect a rise in energy of the frequency sub-band above a first predetermined threshold level for at least a certain amount of time and (ii) cause the associated output to indicate a rise in energy detection in response to detecting the rise in energy above the associated threshold level for at least the associated certain amount of time. The module includes a processing device structured to determine whether a DC arc fault has occurred based on the outputs from the LF and HF current and LF voltage sections.

A DC arc fault detection module includes a current detecting section having at least one output, wherein the current detecting section is structured to determine whether at least one signal based on a current measured from a DC supply line exceeds at least one corresponding predetermined threshold level and cause the at least one output to indicate that the threshold level has been exceeded. The module also includes a processing device structured to: (i) receive the at least one output, (ii) determine whether an arc fault in the DC electrical system has occurred based on at least the at least one output, (iii) determine an estimation of background noise based on at least one signal indicative of a current on the DC supply line, and (iv) adjust the at least one corresponding predetermined threshold level based on the estimation of background noise.

An AC arc fault detection module includes a current detecting section having at least one output and being structured to determine whether at least one signal based on a current measured from an AC phase line exceeds at least one corresponding predetermined threshold level and cause the at least one output to indicate that the threshold has been exceeded. The module also includes a processing device structured to: (i) receive the at least one output, (ii) determine whether an arc fault in the AC electrical system has occurred based on at least the at least one output, (iii) determine an estimation of background noise based on at least one signal indicative of a current on the AC phase line, and (iv) adjust the at least one corresponding predetermined threshold level based on the estimation of background noise.
