The present disclosure provides compositions, films and articles containing a random propylene/ethylene copolymer and a substituted phenylene aromatic diester. Polymerization with an improved catalyst system increases the amount of ethylene incorporated into the random propylene/ethylene copolymer backbone which results in improved thermal properties, improved optical properties, and improved heat seal properties.

A composition is provided which comprises a propylene ethylene random copolymer having a melt flow rate (MFR) (as determined according to ASTM D1238, 230&#xb0; C., 2.16 Kg) of less than 1 g/10 min, a xylene solubles content of less than 7% by weight, an ethylene content of from 3 to 5 percent by weight of the copolymer, and a value equal to or greater than 92 for the product of the Koenig B value times the % mm triads measured on the xylene insoluble fraction of the random copolymer obtained by the wet method. A gas-phase process for making a propylene-based polymer in a fluidized-bed reactor, the reactor containing a fluidized bed including polymer product particles and a catalyst, the process having a set of quantitative criteria for maximum monomer partial pressure, maximum reactor temperature, and comonomer content(s) in the propylene-based polymer. The propylene-based polymer may be EBPT or BPRCP. The catalyst may include a catalyst/donor system comprising (1) a supported Ziegler-Natta pro-catalyst, (2) a co-catalyst, and (3) a mixed external electron donor system including (a) an activity limiting agent including at least one carboxylate ester functional group, and (b) a selectivity control agent.

Producing high comonomer content propylene-based polymers

The present invention relates to polypropylene impact copolymer compositions which exhibit improved stiffness without degrading the impact resistance performance. The polypropylene impact copolymer comprises a matrix and a dispersed phase. The matrix comprises a polypropylene homopolymer or a propylene/alpha-olefin random copolymer which comprises more than 50 wt. % of units derived from propylene monomer. The matrix should have a relatively high crystallinity, preferably 50% or greater. The polypropylene homopolymer or a propylene/alpha-olefin random copolymer preferably has a MWD between 4 and 8, such as typically obtained using Ziegler-Natta catalysts. The dispersed phase in the impact copolymer comprises an ethylene-propylene copolymer which comprises from 45 to 70 wt. % of units derived from an ethylene monomer. Preferably the dispersed phase comprises from 20 to 50 percent by weight of the polypropylene impact copolymer.

A polypropylene nanocomposite composition having at least the following two elements. The first element is a maleated polypropylene polymer having a weight average molecular weight greater than 100,000. The second element is a cation exchanging layered silicate material dispersed in the maleated polypropylene so that more than one half of the layers of the cation exchanging layered silicate material are present as one, two, three, four or five layer units upon examination by electron microscopy. A thermoplastic olefin nanocomposite composition can be obtained by interdispersing a thermoplastic elastomer phase with the above-described polypropylene nanocomposite composition.

This invention relates to a polymer foam prepared by dispersing an organophilic multi-layered material into a melt comprising an olefinic or styrenic polymer having polar functionality so that at least a portion of the polymer intercalates between layers of the particles; and expanding the polymer with a blowing agent under such condition to form the polymer foam. The organophilic multi-layered material can also be dispersed into an olefinic or styrenic monomer, which can then be polymerized to form a polymer melt prior to, or along with the foaming step.

The invention provides composites of organic polymeric compositions including a matrix of an organic polymer and a filler distributed throughout the matrix, the flier being present in the matrix substantially as separate particles, each about the fundamental particle size of the filler. The fillers are unique mixed metal hydroxide compositions that are obtainable in sub-micron size particles. These particles are layered and have a BET specific surface area in excess of about 100 m.sup.2 /g. An anion of the particulates is selected to be compatible with the organic polymer thereby providing ease of dispersion of the filler particles throughout the polymer matrix.
