An electronic device has a host processor system having an AT Attachment (ATA) mass storage interface having a single channel. The electronic device further has at least three mass storage device ports that are capable of accepting ATA mass storage devices. A method for interfacing the mass storage devices to the ATA single channel interface provides the host processor access to all the ATA mass storage devices.

Upon activation of a portable computer, a check is made to see if a user has indicated a reduced operating system is to be used. If the user has indicated the reduced operating system is to be used, the reduced operating system is activated. The method continues with the electronic device sensing an attribute of power adapter, and modifying an aspect of the operation of the electronic device in response to the sensing step.

CPU power consumption is throttled in relation to the discharge current of a battery pack to prevent battery cells of the battery pack from reaching a critical temperature. When a discharge current measuring circuit detects that discharge current exceeds a threshold level, a throttle signal is activated. In response, a CPU stop control line is modulated to reduce CPU power consumption. When the discharge current falls below another threshold and/or after a prescribed time delay, the throttle signal is withdrawn. The duty cycle of the CPU stop control line is determined as a function of the excess discharge current (i.e., actual discharge current level less safety threshold current level). The more excessive the actual discharge current, the larger the duty cycle on the CPU stop modulation line, and the greater the degree that CPU power consumption is reduced.

A method and apparatus for operating an integrated circuit in an electronic device by controlling the supply voltage to the integrated circuit (IC). A parameter of the IC is measured and used to adjust the supply voltage of the IC. The measured parameter is indicative of the effective channel mobility of the IC. One purpose of adjusting the voltage is to modify the effective channel mobility such that the individual channel currents are substantially constant over a predetermined operating temperature range of the IC. The modification of channel mobility is chosen to set the individual channel currents at levels that either maximizes operating speed, minimizes power consumption, extends the range of operating temperature, or increases the operational reliability of the IC.

Voltage control of integrated circuits

An electronic device has a heat producing component thermally coupled to a heat dissipation structure. The electronic device further has control circuitry connected to a temperature sensor that senses the component temperature of the heat producing component. The control circuit is further connected to a cooling device also thermally coupled to the heat dissipation structure. The control circuit varies the cooling rate in a manner that cancels out a lag time which occurs during a change from a steady state condition of the component temperature. The cooling rate of the cooling device is varied by the control circuit in proportion to variation in sensed component temperature from the temperature sensor.
