Methods for improving a toughness and a strength of a stainless steel material are described herein. For example, a high strength stainless steel material can comprise at least 11 wt. % Cr, between 0.01 wt. % and 1.0 wt. % Ni, more 0 wt. % Mo, more than 0 wt. % W, more than 0 wt. % Ti, more than 0 wt. % Nb, and more than 0 wt. % V. In some examples, the high strength stainless steel material can be heat treated with at least one quench treatment and at least one tempering heat treatment. In some examples, the high strength stainless steel material can comprise between 0.01 wt. % and 0.5 wt. % Ni, no more than 0.25 wt. % Mo, no more than 0.1 wt. % W, no more than 0.1 wt. % Ti, no more than 0.1 wt. % Nb, and no more than 0.1 wt. % V.

A seal for use within a hydrocarbon environment including a core and a shell that is coupled to the core. The core includes an elastomeric core material with a first modulus. The shell includes a shell material with a second modulus that is lesser than the first modulus. The core and the shell can be positioned to generate a pressure and electrical seal at a sealing interface.

Methods of capturing carbon dioxide in a wellbore can include installing a sealing element in the wellbore. The sealing element swells in the presence of carbon dioxide and can be used for capturing the carbon. The sealing element can include a carbon-swelling material, such as a carbon-swelling polymers, metal-based materials, or combinations of elastomeric polymers and metal-based materials. The sealing element can also include combinations of different carbon-swelling materials, fillers or other compounds, and materials that are not carbon swellable. The sealing element can create a seal, form an anchor, or create a seal and form an anchor in the wellbore after swelling.
