A cutting tool mounting assembly adapted for attachment to a surface of a rotatable driving member of a cutting tool machine. The cutting tool mounting assembly includes: a cutting tool; a base having a bottom portion for attachment to the surface of the rotatable driving member and a front portion that defines a receptacle having an inner wall; a bushing configured for receipt in the receptacle of the base and having an aperture for receiving the cutting tool; and a sensor element for acquiring and transmitting operation data.

A cutting tool rotatable about a central longitudinal axis of the cutting tool and configured for impingement upon a substrate includes an elongate cutting tool body having a head and a shank axially rearward of the head. The head includes a cutting member at an axial forward end thereof, a bolster portion axially rearward of the cutting member and a base portion at an axial rearward end of the head. In addition, the bolster portion includes a convex shape section and a generally cylindrical section contiguous with and axially rearward of the convex shape section.

A rotatable cutting tool for use in impinging earth strata wherein the rotatable cutting tool comprises a cutting tool body and a hard tip affixed to the cutting tool body. The cutting tool body includes an axial forward end for receiving the hard tip and an axial rearward end, a head portion axially rearward of the axial forward end, a collar portion axially rearward of the head portion, and a shank portion axially rearward of the collar portion and axially forward of the axial rearward end. The head portion includes a plurality of elongated projections extending radially thereabout, each of the elongated projections including a first tapered side and a second tapered side. The first tapered side of each of the elongated projections adjoins the second tapered side of an adjacent elongated projection at a surface of the head portion.

A cutting tool mounting assembly adapted for receiving a cutting tool includes a base having a bottom portion and a front portion that defines a receptacle having an inner wall and a bushing configured for receipt in the receptacle of the base. The bushing includes: a forward face defining an aperture for receiving the cutting tool; a shoulder generally opposite the forward face, the shoulder configured for cooperating with the front portion of the base; and a shank portion extending rearward from the shoulder, the shank portion having an outer surface configured for cooperating with the inner wall of the receptacle. A first elastomeric layer is positioned between the shoulder of the bushing and the front portion of the base and a second elastomeric layer is positioned between the outer surface of the shank portion and the inner wall of the receptacle.

A cutting tool includes a cutting tool body having an axial forward end, an axial rearward end, a head portion adjacent the axial forward end and a shank portion adjacent the axial rearward end. The head portion includes a partial frusto-conical portion having a first lateral edge and a second lateral edge; a first side surface having a first lateral transition edge and a first terminal edge, wherein the first lateral transition edge is adjoined to the first lateral edge of the partial frusto-conical portion; and a second side surface having a second lateral transition edge and a second terminal edge, wherein the second lateral transition edge is adjoined to the second lateral edge of the partial frusto-conical portion, and wherein the first terminal edge is adjoined to the second terminal edge to form a cutting edge. The cutting tool also includes a hard cutting tip.

A dust collecting device disposed circumferentially around a roof tool and in association with a roof drill bit and slidable thereon for collecting and removing dust generated during a dry drilling operation. The dust collecting device comprises a cylinder member, a bushing, and a mounting assembly comprising a top washer, a rubber insert, and a bottom washer. Another aspect of the invention provides a dust collecting device comprising a cylinder member, a bushing, and a mounting assembly comprising a disk and clips. The rubber insert and the clips resist movement of the dust collecting device along the drill steel of the roof tool during the drilling operation.

An apparatus for mounting a cutting tool includes a retainer sleeve that defines at least one retention groove adjacent an axial forward end thereof and a washer removably attached to the retainer sleeve. The washer has a forward surface, a rearward surface and an interior surface that define a central opening, wherein the interior surface includes at least one protrusion extending inward into the central opening that is structured and arranged for cooperating with the at least one retention groove in the retainer sleeve. The retainer sleeve further defines a longitudinal slot that extends from an axial forward end to an axial rearward end of the retainer sleeve. The washer further includes a key extending inward into the central opening that is structured and arranged for cooperating with the longitudinal slot in the retainer sleeve.

A rotatable cutting tool for use in impinging earth strata such as, for example, asphaltic roadway material, coal deposits, mineral formations and the like. The rotatable cutting tool includes a cutting tool body having a through coolant channel and a two-piece head portion, e.g., the head portion of the cutting tool body having a base portion and a nose portion with a hard tip cutting insert affixed to the nose portion. The through coolant provides for cooling the hard tip cutting insert during operation of the cutting tool. In addition, the through coolant also provides for suppressing dust created by the rotatable cutting tool during operation.

A cutting tool body that includes an elongate steel body, which has an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. The elongate steel body contains at the axial forward end thereof a cold-headed socket. The cold-headed socket has an axial forward open end, an axial rearward closed surface, and a side socket surface extending between the axial forward open end and the axial rearward closed surface. The side socket surface contains an undercut adjacent the axial rearward closed surface.

A roof drill bit has an elongate roof drill bit body, which has a forward end and a rearward end. The roof drill bit body contains a slot at the forward end. The roof drill bit body contains a dust port wherein the dust port has a central longitudinal dust axis. The roof drill bit further has a hard insert received within the slot wherein the hard insert has a leading surface. The leading surface of the hard insert is rotationally forward of the central longitudinal dust axis of the dust port.

A roof bit drill has a central shaft with a front end and a back end. The drill also has a base secured about the central shaft proximate to the front end, wherein the base has clearance channels extending axially therethrough. At least one cutting element is arranged on the base in a convex cutting pattern to permit loosened material to be evacuated. The roof bit drill may further include a drill depth locator to identify when the drill has been advanced within a mine roof to a predetermined depth. A method for using the roof drill bit is also disclosed herein.
