Operating an engine includes moving a piston toward a top-dead-center position in a cylinder, and directly injecting a gaseous hydrogen fuel into the cylinder in an injection path targeting a center cone in a combustion bowl of the piston. The gaseous hydrogen fuel is impinged upon an outer cone surface, and fluids advanced upwardly along a reentrant bowl wall toward a bowl throat opening. Squished fluids are advanced from a squish volume into the reentrant bowl throat, to produce a combined mixing flow of the advanced fluids and the squished fluids around a flow axis extending circumferentially around a piston center axis. A dual fuel system for an internal combustion engine includes a first fuel supply of a liquid pilot fuel, a primary fuel supply of a liquid primary fuel, and a dual fuel injector. The dual fuel injector includes a spill valve fluidly connected with a plunger cavity and movable to control a start of injection and an end of injection, and an admission valve. The admission valve is movable to admit a pilot fuel into the fuel injector, such that the pilot fuel is conveyed through an outlet check to form, within a primary fuel passage fluidly connected to the plunger cavity, a segmented fuel charge of leading pilot fuel and trailing primary fuel by displacing some of the primary fuel. The liquid pilot fuel may be a higher cetane/lower octane liquid fuel, and the primary fuel may be a lower cetane/higher octane liquid fuel.

Apparatuses, systems and methods are disclosed including auxiliary system for controlling an enthalpy of air to a turbine of a turbocharger of an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The auxiliary system optionally including: a motive air device configured to receive at least some of the air and produce an airflow of the at least some of the air; an auxiliary heat source in selective fluid communication with the motive air device and configured to heat the airflow; and a controller configured to control operation of the auxiliary heat source and control the airflow to the turbine based upon at least one of a temperature, a pressure and a mass flow rate of the air upstream of or downstream from the turbine.

This disclosure describes, in part, systems and structures for an exhaust assembly that includes an exhaust tube and a coolant passage. The exhaust tube is oriented about an axis and an exhaust gas is configured to flow through the exhaust tube in a direction away from an end of the exhaust tube. The coolant passage is oriented about the axis radially outward of the exhaust tube, the coolant passage having an inner shell and an outer shell. The heat capacity of the volume of the coolant contained within the coolant passage is above a threshold ratio of a heat capacitance of a radiation shield, exhaust tube, and inner shell of the coolant passage to prevent coolant boiling after shutdown.

A gaseous fuel engine includes an engine housing having a cylinder block with a combustion cylinder therein, and an engine head including an intake port, an exhaust port, a fuel port, and an igniter bore, each extending to a fire deck. The gaseous fuel engine includes a fuel admission valve movable to close and open the fuel port. A non-axisymmetric clearance is defined between an inner port surface and the fuel admission valve and directionally biases a flow of gaseous fuel from the fuel port. A power system may include a high-speed flywheel connected to an engine of a machine; a battery; a motor-generator unit (MGU) connected to the engine and the battery; and a turbocharger connected to the engine. One or more of the high-speed flywheel, the battery and the MGU, or the turbocharger may be configured to provide supplemental power to power provided by the engine to operate the machine, or provide replacement power when no power is provided by the engine to operate the machine.

An engine component comprises one or more thermal barrier coatings applied to one or more areas of the engine component. The thermal barrier coatings reduce the temperature rate of change of the areas to which the thermal barrier coating is applied. Reducing the temperature rate of change can help reduce lattice structure damage caused by different temperatures in different areas of the engine component. The thermal barrier coating can be applied as a monolithic layer on a surface of the engine component or can be applied in different areas using patterns. The patterns allow for the tuning of the performance characteristics (temperature rate of change) of the areas of the engine component and can help reduce defect propagation, such as cracks, in the thermal barrier coating from one area of the thermal barrier coating to other areas of the thermal barrier coating.

An engine system includes an engine housing having a cylinder block and a cylinder head. An intake opening and an exhaust opening and an igniter opening are formed in a fire deck surface of the cylinder head. A plurality of always-open fuel admission ports are fluidly connected to a combustion chamber and arranged in at least one of the cylinder block or the cylinder head. The always-open fuel admission ports convey a gaseous fuel such as a gaseous hydrogen fuel, a gaseous hydrocarbon fuel, or still others, to the combustion chamber.

An engine includes a cylinder block having formed therein a plurality of cylinders, a main oil gallery, and a spray jet gallery. A cross-hole is fluidly connected to the main oil gallery and extends to the spray jet gallery. Oil spray jets are each fluidly connected to one of a plurality of oil feed holes fluidly connected to the spray jet gallery. An oil admission valve, which can be hydraulically actuated or electrically actuated, is supported in the cylinder block and movable between a closed position to block the spray jet gallery and each of the oil feed holes from the cross-hole, and an open position.

A fuel injector assembly for an engine. The engine includes a cylinder head defining a through-hole. The fuel injector assembly includes an insert, having a first end and a second end, configured to be received within the through-hole and coupled to the cylinder head. The insert defines a bore extending from the first end to the second end. The fuel injector assembly further includes a fuel injector including a plurality of orifices, received within the bore of the insert; and a duct structure including a plurality of ducts, coupled to the insert such that the plurality of ducts align with the plurality of orifices to at least partially receive one or more fuel jets from the plurality of orifices of the fuel injector.

A fuel injector for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. The fuel injector includes a body defining an orifice. The orifice is configured to provide passage to a fuel into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. The orifice includes an inlet port having a first oval shape and an outlet port having a second oval shape. The second al shape is orthogonal to the first oval shape. Moreover, a transition from the first oval shape to the second oval shape defines a stagnation plane, facilitating an exit of the fuel as a fan spray from the outlet port.

An internal combustion engine includes an engine block having a cylinder, a cylinder head disposed on one end of the cylinder, a piston disposed within the cylinder, and a rim. A piston crown of the piston defines a piston bowl. The rim depends from at least one of the cylinder head and piston and is located radially inward from the piston crown. At least one of the piston crown and cylinder head defines a passageway that is configured to guide a squish flow from between the piston crown and cylinder head to the piston bowl to interact with a plurality of flames within the piston bowl to enhance combustion.
