A peripheral catheter having a catheter tip diffuser for reducing an exit velocity of an infusant within the catheter. Pluralities of diffusion side holes are provided on the tip portion of the catheter. Some examples further include pluralities of annularly arranged, staggered diffusion holes provided on the tip portion of an intravenous catheter to streamline infusant issued from the diffusion holes. An inner surface of each diffusion hole is further angled relative to the inner surface of the catheter lumen such that an infusant within the lumen exits the catheter though the diffusion holes at an angle less than 90&#xb0;.

A hole is formed through a wall of a distal portion of the catheter body. A portion of the proximal surface of the hole is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter body. The acute angle of the proximal hole surface opens proximally with respect to the catheter body.

Systems and methods for improving catheter hole array efficiency

Peripheral catheters having diffusion holes can be reinforced by embedding stripe material within the material of the catheter tube body. The stripe material can be embedded using a coextrusion process. The stripe material may consist of one or more stripes which may be arranged in a straight or non-linear pattern such as a helical pattern. The diffusion holes can be positioned between adjacent stripes or between adjacent portions of a single stripe. The diffusion holes can be formed after the stripe material has been embedded. A lubricant may be applied to a peripheral catheter that includes stripe material and diffusion holes.

An auto-occlusion safety device is provided for use in preventing rupture of infusion components during rapid infusion procedures. An occlusion valve is disclosed having a threshold pressure that is less than a rupture tolerance of the infusion system components. As the fluid pressure of the infusion system increases beyond the threshold pressure of the occlusion valve, the occlusion valve is automatically activated thereby occluding fluid flow upstream from a vulnerable infusion component. An accumulator is further disclosed for use in combination with the safety device to compensate for time delays in full activation of the occlusion valve.

A medical device includes a vascular access device with an access port having a septum and a slit. The slit is formed on the inner surface of the body of the septum where the access port receives an access device that is separate from the vascular access device through the slit of the septum. A pivoting member in communication with the access port pivots when the port is accessed by an access device. The medical device may be used to control the volume displacement of a chamber within the medical device by decreasing the volume of the chamber by inserting a substance having a mass into the chamber, pivoting a structure associated with the chamber, and increasing the volume of the chamber simultaneously and commensurately with the mass of the substance inserted into the chamber.

An assembly with a needle shield is provided. The needle shield includes a lock for preventing unwanted proximal and distal movement of the needle once the needle has been withdrawn into the needle shield.

A medical needle assembly includes a needle cannula having a body and a tip. The tip is disposed at a distal end of the cannula. An elongate member has a first end and a second end. The first end is fixedly attached to the body of the needle cannula at a connection point and the second end extends radially outward from the needle body. A shield is slidingly mounted to the needle for movement between a proximal position to a distal position. The shield includes a shield body having a central chamber, a distal end and a proximal end as well as a plate secured to the shield body and defining an aperture. As the shield is moved from the proximal position to the distal position, the place displaces the second end of the elongate member to a position near the needle cannula, permitting the elongate member to pass through the aperture. When the shield is in the distal position, the send end of the elongate member extends radially outward from the needle body, preventing passage of the elongate member through the aperture. The elongate member may be a leaf spring. A feature may be secured to the body of the cannula to restrict movement of the shield with respect to the needle.
