A digital holographic microscope that includes a light source and a photonic integrated circuit. The photonic integrated circuit can include a branching waveguide optically coupled to the light source, and a multi-angle illumination device optically coupled to the branching waveguide. In various examples, the multi-angle illumination device includes an optical phased array that includes a plurality of light emitters. In various examples, the multi-angle illumination device includes a grating coupler.

A turning grating coupler device comprises a waveguide core layer including a grating structure and an output slab adjoined with the grating structure. The grating structure comprises an array of sub-waveguides substantially parallel to each other along a first propagation direction. Each of the sub-waveguides has opposing sidewalls, and a width of each sub-waveguide is defined by a distance between the sidewalls. The width of each sub-waveguide is varied such that each of the sidewalls has a periodic structure that produces a sidewall periodic modulation that is out of phase with respective sidewall periodic modulations of adjacent neighboring sub-waveguides. An input edge is configured to receive a light beam from a source and direct the beam into the array of sub-waveguides in the first propagation direction. The sub-waveguides are configured to diffract the beam into the output slab in a second propagation direction substantially perpendicular to the first propagation direction.

Turning grating device for emission of arbitrary optical beam profiles from waveguides into two-dimensional space

Systems and methods for a tunable RF synthesizer based on offset optical frequency combs is provided herein. An exemplary system includes two lasers, a first laser generating a first laser output and a second laser generating a second laser output; and a coupler that receives the first and second laser outputs. Further, the system includes a resonator having first and second sections coupled to one another, the coupler coupling the first and second laser outputs into the resonator; a splitter that couples the first section to the second section, the splitter splitting a first proportion of the first laser output and a second proportion of the second laser output onto different paths within the resonator; and a controller that controls the splitter to change a size of the first proportion in relation to the first laser and the second proportion in relation to the second laser.

A method may comprise: generating an optical frequency comb; applying a filter in a first configuration to the generated optical frequency comb to select a first frequency of the optical frequency comb, wherein, in the first configuration, the first frequency aligns with a first pass-band of the filter, and a second frequency of the optical frequency comb does not align with a second pass-band of the filter; altering the filter to a second configuration to shift the first pass-band and the second pass-band to a shifted first pass-band and a shifted second pass-band; and applying the altered filter to the generated optical frequency comb to select the second frequency of the optical frequency comb, wherein the second frequency aligns with the shifted second pass-band of the filter, and the first frequency of the optical frequency comb does not align with the shifted first pass-band of the filter.

System and method for generating optical frequency combs using an optical waveguide including chirped Bragg gratings

An optical device comprises a waveguide core layer that includes a planar lens structure having a first end and a second end, with the planar lens structure including a plurality of lens tapers extending from at least one of the first or seconds ends in a convex-shaped array. The waveguide core layer also includes a waveguide slab that adjoins with the planar lens structure, such that the waveguide slab is in optical communication with the plurality of lens tapers. The plurality of lens tapers are configured to adiabatically transition an index of refraction from a first index value, external to the planar lens structure, to a second index value, internal to the planar lens structure.

A multilayer waveguide coupler comprising a first grating and a second grating is provided. Each first copropagating waveguide of the first grating has a first periodically modulated width. Each second copropagating waveguide of the second grating has a second periodically modulated width. The second grating is positioned so that a phase offset is present between the first periodically modulated width of the first copropagating waveguides and the second periodically modulated width of the second copropagating waveguides. The grating spaced distance and phase offset are selected so that light diffracted out of the first copropagating waveguides and the second copropagating waveguides in the first direction interferes constructively to form the first light beam and light diffracted out of the first copropagating waveguides and the second copropagating waveguides in the second direction interferes destructively.

Systems and methods for a tunable radio frequency synthesizer utilizing optical frequency combs are provided. In one embodiment, an RF signal generator comprises: an SBS pump laser segment including a first and second SBS pump laser each generating SBS laser light at different respective frequencies; a TE/TM dual comb resonator comprising a comb optical resonator coupled to the first and second SBS pump lasers, wherein the comb optical resonator generates a pair of counter-propagating optical frequency combs of different polarities from the SBS laser light; a filter resonator segment configured to provide feedback to the TE/TM dual comb resonator to lock a relative position of the pair of counter-propagating optical frequency combs, the filter resonator comprising a tunable optical filter to output a discrete tuned RF signal output based on a comb line pair that includes a single comb line from each of the pair of counter-propagating optical frequency combs.

Systems and methods for a tunable radio frequency synthesizer utilizing optical frequency combs

Systems and methods for an integrated optical atomic sensor are provided. In one embodiment, an optical atomic sensor comprises: first and second photonic integrated circuits and an atom trapping chamber positioned between and bonded to the photonic integrated circuits with the integrated circuits aligned parallel to each other; and atomic vapor sealed within the chamber; wherein the first and second photonic integrated circuits each comprise: a plurality of grating emitters fabricated into respective surfaces of the first and second photonic integrated circuits waveguides configured to couple laser light from laser light sources to the grating emitters; wherein at least one set of the grating emitters are arranged to launch laser light beams into the chamber in a pattern structured to cool the vapor and produce at least one atom trap; wherein the grating emitters further include at least one grating emitter configured to emit a laser light probe into vapor.

Systems and methods for an integrated optical atomic sensor

A bichromatic grating coupler comprises a two-dimensional diffraction grating structure, including a first sub-grating having a first periodic structure and a second sub-grating having a second periodic structure. The first and second sub-gratings are superimposed with respect to each other in the diffraction grating structure. A first optical port is coupled to the diffraction grating structure along a first direction, and a second optical port is coupled to the diffraction grating structure along a second direction. The first optical port is configured to direct a first light beam having a first wavelength to the diffraction grating structure, such that the first light beam is diffracted in a first direction by the first sub-grating. The second optical port is configured to direct a second light beam having a second wavelength to the diffraction grating structure, such that the second light beam is diffracted in a second direction by the second sub-grating.
