A CPAP system includes a flow generator (), a patient interface (), an air delivery conduit () that interconnects the flow generator and the patient interface, wherein the air delivery conduit has an internal diameter of less than 19 mm. Preferably the air delivery conduit has an internal diameter of between about 10 mm and about 18 mm. The CPAP system may also include a controller for compensating for pressure swings and/or increased impedance within the system. Preferably the blower includes a low inertia blower.

CPAP systems

A respiratory apparatus evaluates accuracy of a pressure sensor, such as when only a single pressure sensor is provided. The accuracy of the pressure sensor may be assessed based on pressure measurement obtained from the pressure sensor and a subordinate or secondary characteristic of the respiratory device such as altitude or atmospheric pressure. A controller or processor may calculate the altitude of the respiratory device based in part on the pressure measurement. In some embodiments, the assessment of the pressure sensor may involve an evaluation of the calculated altitude. In some cases, the assessment of the pressure sensor may involve determining an estimated pressure based on a calculated altitude, and comparing the pressure measurement obtained from the pressure sensor with the estimated pressure.

A method for controlling a humidifier of a CPAP device including a controller, the method including controlling a heating element in the humidifier with command signals from the controller, sensing a temperature of a fluid in the humidifier with a sensor in the humidifier that transmits signals to the controller, establishing an acceptable operating range for the signal transmitted to the controller, determining whether the transmitted signal is within the acceptable operating range, if the signal is within the acceptable operating range treating the signal as being indicative of the temperature of the fluid in the humidifier and using the signal to control the heating element, and if the signal is outside of the acceptable operating range, the controller determines the humidifier to be unavailable.

A blower comprises a housing, an inlet to receive air, an outlet to deliver a flow of air and a deformable member configured to pump a chamber. The deformable member may be configurable to a first configuration and a second configuration, for example by electrical energy that may be applied as current or voltage. The blower may comprise a plurality of chambers, wherein each chamber may be compressed out of phase with each other, for example such that the flow rate of the generated air flow may not fluctuate as much. In other forms, the blower may comprise a plurality of chambers that vary in size.

Respiratory therapy apparatus

A CPAP device wherein humidification detection and/or control is performed by a microprocessor of the CPAP device without requiring a separate humidification control chip. The microprocessor may also control the flow generator motor and the flow generator display. Further, the microprocessor may include code to prevent 'brown-out', and/or to detect the availability (connection and/or operability) of the humidifier. Humidifier detection may be carried out using power consumption or temperature sensor signal analysis, e.g., facilitated by use of a pull-up resistor.
