A colored coating composition comprising a white base paint and at least one colored pigment in a form that can be readily mixed with the white base paint, the white base paint comprising a film-forming polymer, a liquid carrier, one or more opacifying white pigments and one or more extenders, the colored coating composition having a light reflectance value Y less than 110, and greater than that defined by the equation Y=mC+K, where 25&#x3e;C&#x3e;1.0, C being the chroma of the colored coating composition, m and K being empirical coefficients selected according to the type and number of the type of the at least one colored pigment, and dependant on the hue angle of the coating composition.

A method suitable for use in small trade stores or retail shops for assisting in providing the correct color or coating compositions mixed in the store or shop in which colorants (II) are added to a base paint (), the base paint () being provided in a lidded container (I). The base paint () is pre dispensed in a lidded container (I), thereby avoiding the need to weigh it accurately in store thus saving time. Further time is saved by adding the colorants simultaneously to the base paint (). The actual load (usually the combined weight of the can and the contents) is compared to the correct load stored in a database and the operator is alerted if the two fail to match.

Method for ensuring that coating compositions have correct color

A method for obtaining an approximate standard color definition for a sample color () without the need for standard conditions of illumination or observation. The method comprises using color sensing equipment such as a digital camera () to sense under non-standard conditions both the sample color and a plurality of reference colors () each being provided on a template () and each having a known standard color definition. The sensing under non-standard conditions produces a non-standard color definition both for the sample color and for each of the reference colors. The non-standard color definitions of reference colors near in color space to the sample color are compared with the known standard color definitions for the reference colors to obtain correction factors which are then applied to the non-standard color definition of the sample color to convert it to color definition which, though it is only an approximation of the standard color definition, is nevertheless sufficiently close to the true standard color definition to be useful in color matching.

A system for introducing flowable additive e.g. colorant from a syringe into paint varnish, woodstain or the like contained in a closed container provided with an inlet into the container which inlet is closed by a closure. The inlet is openable by insertion of the nozzle of the syringe into the inlet which thereby ensures that the nozzle of the syringe is correctly located in the inlet before expulsion of the additive commences.

Measurement of the color properties of wet paint, such as lightness by colorimetry or photospectrometry, is carried out on a sample volume contained in a vessel and while the sample volume is subjected to shearing forces and advantageously also turbulence. The shearing and turbulence are created by a rotating disc having a spiral rib configuration on one surface which faces a window through which the measurements are made by a spectrophotometer.

Method and apparatus for the measurement of color properties of paint

Surface coating films containing metallic flake pigment are characterized by (a) illuminating the film with a parallel beam of light which is inclined at a given angle to the film normal and (b) measuring the intensity of light reflected from a point on the film at a plurality of azimuthal viewing positions located in a circle which lies in a plane parallel to the film and through the center of which passes the film normal at the point. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the measurements is described. The invention enables the frequency distribution of the orientations of the metallic flake in the film to be determined.
