A first network device determines whether a first reference code included in at least a first transmission on a communication channel is associated with a code configured in the first network device. The communication channel is shared among a plurality of communication networks and the first reference code is associated with a first communication network of the plurality of communication networks. The first network device joins the first communication network associated with the first reference code in response to determining the first reference code is associated with the code configured in the first network device. The first network device communicates with a second network device in the first communication network using the code configured in the first network device.

Channel reuse among communication networks sharing a communication channel

A powerline communication (PLC) power supply and modem interface can be implemented using a power supply processing unit coupled with a PLC modem unit. The power supply processing unit generates a composite PLC signal comprising a PLC signal and a DC power signal modulated with a zero cross signal (all determined from an AC powerline signal). High-powered components of the PLC modem unit can cause signal distortion in the zero cross signal component of the composite PLC signal making it difficult to extract zero cross information. An error correction unit can be implemented at the PLC modem unit to minimize the signal distortion and generate a zero cross signal with little or no error. The PLC modem unit also extracts the PLC signal and the DC power signal from the composite PLC signal, and processes the PLC signal using the zero cross information extracted from the corrected zero cross signal.

Error correction for powerline communication modem interface

Techniques for optimizing a cascade gain device comprising at least two gain stages are disclosed. A first noise figure associated with the first gain stage is incrementally increased by a plurality of noise figure increments determined based, at least in part, on a minimum noise figure and a maximum noise figure associated with the first gain stage. At each of the plurality of noise figure increments, at least a gain value that corresponds to the noise figure increment is calculated. One of the plurality of noise figure increments and the corresponding gain value is selected as an optimum noise figure of the first gain stage and an optimum gain value of the first gain stage respectively. Parameters of an inter-stage matching network associated with the first gain stage are configured based on the optimum noise figure and the optimum gain of the first gain stage.

Optimizing cascade gain stages in a communication system

Functionality of a powerline communication (PLC) power supply and modem interface can be implemented using a power supply processing unit and a PLC modem unit that can be coupled together using standard, two-wire cabling. The power supply processing unit can generate a DC power signal and a zero cross signal based on an AC powerline signal received via a PLC network. The power supply processing unit can modulate the zero cross signal onto the DC power signal. The power supply processing unit can then generate a composite PLC signal comprising a PLC signal (extracted from the AC powerline signal) and the DC power signal modulated with the zero cross signal. The PLC modem unit can extract the PLC signal, the DC power signal, and the zero cross signal from the composite PLC signal, and then can process the PLC signal based on information associated with the zero cross signal.

Powerline communication power supply and modem interface mechanism

Wired and wireless communication networks can be subject to noise and interference resulting data corruption. In a communication system comprising a first network device and a second network device, the first and the second network devices can be configured for optimizing the data rate of the communication system. On receiving a multi-band signal at the first network device from the second network device during a channel adaptation mode, the multi-band signal can be split into a plurality of independent frequency band signals. A performance measurement of a first of the plurality of frequency band signals corresponding to a lowest frequency band signal can be calculated. Communication parameters can be determined for each of the plurality of frequency band signals based on the performance measurement of the first of the plurality of frequency band signals. The communication parameters can be provided from the first network device to the second network device.

Optimizing data rate of multi-band multi-carrier communication systems

Powerline communication networks can be subject to burst interference resulting in loss of throughput and data corruption. A transmitting network device and a receiving network device of a powerline communication network can be configured to select a best performing powerline terminal coupling configuration for powerline communications. The transmitting network device can determine performance measurements associated with each of a plurality of powerline communication channels. The transmitting network device can select a best performing powerline communication channel based on the performance measurements, and can provide an indication of the best performing powerline communication channel to the receiving network device. The transmitting and the receiving network devices can each configure their respective terminal connections to switch to the best performing powerline communication channel. Subsequent communications between the transmitting and the receiving network devices can be initiated via the best performing powerline communication channel.

Terminal selection diversity for powerline communications

Wired and wireless communication networks can be subject to burst interference resulting in loss of throughput and data corruption. In a communication system comprising a transmitting network device and a receiving network device, the transmitting network device can be configured to implement a dynamic bit allocation technique for retransmitting packets of a failed packet transmission. On receiving a request for retransmission from the receiving network device, the transmitting network device can dynamically allocate bits of original symbols across two or more constituent symbols per original symbol. The transmitting network device can allocate the two or more constituent symbols across one or more retransmission packets to exploit time diversity. The transmitting network device can also vary modulation and coding schemes and other transmit parameters to generate robust retransmission packets.

Dynamic bit allocation for communication networks subject to burst interference

Disclosed are systems and methods for configuring a station coupled to a communication medium. Received signal powers at the station of signals transmitted from a plurality of other stations coupled to the communication medium are measured. A transmit power level of the station, used for determining powers of signals transmitted from the station, is determined based at least in part upon the received signal powers. A detection threshold of the station, used for determining which received signals to accept for further processing and which received signals to ignore, is determined based at least in part upon the received signal powers.

In a communication system comprising a transmitting network device and a receiving network device, the transmitting network device can be configured to implement balanced bit loading for retransmitting packets of a failed packet transmission. On receiving a request for retransmission from the receiving network device, the transmitting network device can identify and eliminate sub-carriers that are associated with a bit load that is less than a predefined bit load threshold. The transmitting network device can attempt to reallocate bit loads of the eliminated sub-carriers to remaining sub-carriers across two or more constituent symbols per original symbol.

A method () and simulation tool () having enhanced accuracy and speed for simulation using ray launching in a mixed environment () by using adaptive ray expansion mechanisms can include a memory () coupled to a processor (). The processor can select () a target area within the mixed environment and modify () the propagation properties of the adaptive ray expansion mechanisms according to characteristics classified for the target area. The processor can further classify characteristics for the target area by transmitting and reflecting rays for indoor building regions and for outdoor building regions. The number of bounces or a power level threshold assigned to a transmitted ray is a function of the environment where it propagates. The simulation tool can determine the target area or a region of interest by using a global positioning service device () externally attached to a device performing functions of the simulation tool.

Method and apparatus for enhancing the accuracy and speed of a ray launching simulation tool

A system () and method () for improving Radio Frequency (RF) Antenna Simulation is provided. The method can include determining () a proximity of an antenna () to a scattering structure (), determining () a switching distance to the scattering structure that establishes when to switch the antenna on () and off () from a composite antenna pattern to a free space antenna pattern, and predicting RF coverage of the antenna responsive to the switching. The switching distance can be a function of a material type and a surface geometry of the scattering structure and a wavelength of the antenna. The method can also include evaluating a sensory mismatch in the antenna, and using a composite antenna pattern corresponding to the sensory mismatch.

System and method to improve RF simulations

The system can include a transmitter () for successively launching a plurality of rays, and a receiver () for receiving transmission rays and reflection rays. Method and system for adaptive ray launching

An Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexer (OFDM) transmitter and receiver apparatus consistent with certain embodiments of the present invention receives data to be transmitted and maps () a first portion of the data to a first polarization state and a second portion of the data to a second polarization state. A first transmitter () transmits the first portion of the data as a set of first OFDM subcarriers using an antenna () exhibiting a first polarization. A decoder () decodes the first and second sets of OFDM subcarriers and combines them into a stream of data.

Communication systems include a transmitter that modulates a radio signal transmitted from two differently polarized antennas during a state time in which a wave state of the radio signal conveys information and is based on one or more polarization states selected from a constellation of polarization states comprising at least three polarization states. The communication system includes a receiver that intercepts the radio signal by two differently polarized antennas during the state time, and demodulates the signal. The polarization states may identify user devices or may quantify a portion of the information intended for a user device.
