An ultrasonic diagnostic imaging system is operated to acquire an ultrasound image of a region of the body containing suspect anatomy such as a suspected lesion. A body marker template of the region of the body is displayed on a touchscreen display of the imaging system. The operator records the location of the suspect anatomy by touching a corresponding point on the body marker template displayed on the touchscreen display. The mark on the template can be finely adjusted by one or more controls on the imaging system control panel. The body marker template can also record a graphic indicating the orientation of the ultrasound probe relative to the body when the suspect anatomy was imaged. A report generator produces a report containing both the ultrasound image of the suspect anatomy and the body marker template with the indicated location of the suspect anatomy.

An ultrasound imaging system () includes a display () for displaying an ultrasound image and an analysis package operatively connected to the image display. The analysis package provides a user the ability to manage an ultrasound measurement-based calculation. The analysis package facilitates the management of the measurement-based calculation by displaying for the user a sequence of data entry steps. Information necessary for managing the calculation is accepted and verified at each step and then, also used to determine which step to display next. At the conclusion of the final step, the measurement-based calculation is saved in the system.

An ultrasound imaging system includes an ultrasound scanhead coupled to an image processor that causes ultrasound images to be generated on the viewing screen of a display. The image processor includes a beamformer generating transmit and receive beams, a signal processor and a conventional scan converter. The signal processor receives signals from the beamformer to generate image data corresponding to an image, analyzes the image data and, based on the analysis, determines the number of transmit focal positions that should be used as well as the optimum location for each focal position. The signal processor then couples data to the beamformer to set the location of the focal position(s).

Strain rate analysis is performed for ultrasonic images in which the spatial gradient of velocity is calculated in the direction of tissue motion. Strain rate is calculated for cardiac ultrasound images in the direction of motion which, for myocardial images, may be either in the plane of the myocardium or across the myocardium. Strain rate information is calculated for a sequence of images of a heart cycle and displayed for an automatically drawn border such as the endocardial border over the full heart cycle.

This invention describes automatically tracing a tissue border in an ultrasonic image which is accomplished by acquiring one or more images, locating anatomical landmarks in the image, fitting a border trace to the anatomical landmarks, and displaying an ultrasonic image in which a tissue border has been automatically traced. Adjustable control points are located on the displayed border, enabling the automatically drawn border to be manually adjusted by a rubberbanding technique.

Automated border detection in ultrasonic diagnostic images

The end diastole and end systole images from an acquired cardiac loop are shown side by side on an image display for automatic border tracing. The border tracings can be used to calculate ejection fraction in real time. The cardiac loops may be first acquired then processed for automatic border definition, or the acquired images can be processed in real time to indicate their suitability for automatic border detection as they are acquired.

Acquisition, analysis and display of ultrasonic diagnostic cardiac images

Ultrasonic cardiac image information is acquired and segmented by automatic border detection. The segmented ultrasonic information is used to display regional wall motion over time. The segmented information may be presented in a color-coded representation, or entered automatically as qualitative or quantitative measures on a scorecard of cardiac performance. The inventive technique is applicable to both two dimensional and three dimensional ultrasonic image information.
