The present invention relates to the field of magnetic assemblies, magnetic apparatuses and processes for producing optical effect layers (OEL) comprising magnetically oriented non-spherical magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles on a substrate and providing an impression of a crescent moon-shaped element moving or rotating upon tilting the optical effect layer (OEL). In particular, the present invention relates to magnetic assemblies, magnetic apparatuses and processes for producing said OELs as anti-counterfeit means on security documents or security articles or for decorative purposes.

Magnetic assemblies, apparatuses and processes for producing optical effect layers comprising oriented non-spherical magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles

The present invention relates to the field of optical effect layers (OEL) comprising magnetically oriented non-spherical oblate magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles on a substrate, spinneable magnetic assemblies and processes for producing said optical effect layers (OEL). In particular, the present invention relates to spinneable magnetic assemblies and processes for producing said OELs as anti-counterfeit means on security documents or security articles or for decorative purposes.

The disclosure relates to the field of the protection of security documents, such as for example banknotes and identity documents against counterfeit and illegal reproduction. In particular, the present disclosure provides processes for producing optical effect layers (OELs) on a substrate and OELs obtained thereof, said process including two magnetic orientation steps: a step of exposing a coating composition having platelet-shaped magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles to a dynamic magnetic field of a first magnetic-field-generating device so as to bi-axially orient at least a part of the platelet-shaped magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles, and a step of exposing the coating composition to a static magnetic field of a second magnetic-field-generating device, thereby mono-axially re-orienting at least a part of the platelet-shaped magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles.

Processes for producing effects layers

The invention relates to the field of non-spherical magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles and coating compositions comprising those pigment particles for producing optical effect layers (OEL) wherein the magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles are magnetically oriented. In particular, the present invention provides uses of said optical effect layers (OEL) layers as anti-counterfeit means on security documents or security articles. In particular, it relates to the field of non-spherical magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles comprising a magnetic metal selected from the group consisting of cobalt, iron, gadolinium and nickel; a magnetic alloy of iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, or a mixture of two or more thereof; a magnetic oxide of chromium, manganese, cobalt, iron, nickel or a mixture of two or more thereof; or a mixture of two or more thereof, and having a d50 value higher than 6 &#x3bc;m and lower than 13 &#x3bc;m, their uses in coating compositions comprising a binder material for producing an optical effect layer (OEL), OEL obtained thereof and processes for producing said OEL.

Magnetic or magnetisable pigment particles and optical effect layers

Disclosure relates to the field of graphical elements and is directed to a device for producing an optical effect layer (OEL). Disclosure provides an optical effect that is easy to detect as such and exhibits a viewing-angle dependent apparent motion of image features over an extended length if the viewing angle with respect to the OEL changes. OEL includes a binder material being at least partially transparent and a plurality of particles dispersed within the layer. Each particle has a non-isotropic reflectivity and may be magnetic or magnetizable. Orientation of the particles forms an orientation pattern extending over a length within an extended surface of the OEL, such that the local average of an angle between (i) a straight line along an observed longest dimension within the corresponding cross-section shape, and (ii) said first direction x varies according to a function (&#x3b8;) of a position (P) along said first direction.

Optical effect layer

The disclosure relates to the field of graphical elements and is directed to an optical effect layer (OEL), a device and a method for producing same. The device includes a substrate (S), and on the substrate (S) a plurality of jointly visible zones of first () and of second () hardened coatings including oriented pigment particles (P, P) in a transparent binder (M, M), the first () hardened coating having a pigment orientation imitating a first curved surface and the second () hardened coating having a pigment orientation imitating a second curved surface different from the first curved surface.
