A device for seamlessly providing 10BASE-T compatible data communications over an ordinary single twisted-pair home phone line between multiple computers and/or peripherals is disclosed. Each component that is to communicate over a home phone line needs a 10BASE-T compatible network interface card (NIC) for interfacing with the device. A transmit/receive switch is used to switch the device between a transmit mode and a receive mode. When a signal is being transmitted from a component, a Manchester decoder converts the signals received from the NIC into a raw data stream. A differential converter converts the raw data signal received from the NIC to a differential signal. A modulator is used to modulate the signal to a RF signal using a PSK, QPSK, QAM, MCM or similar modulation schemes. A filter is used to limit the bandwidth of the modulated signal and a driver is used to amplify the signal to match the impedance of the phone line. When the device receives a signal over the phone line, the signal is filtered using a bandpass filter and then amplified. The signal is then demodulated using an appropriate demodulation scheme before being differentially encoded. A Manchester encoder encodes the received signal for compatible operation with a receiving NIC.

Ethernet to phase shift key converter

A device for seamlessly providing 10BASE-T compatible data communications over an ordinary single twisted pair home phone line between multiple computers, between computers and peripherals, and between multiple peripherals. Each component that is to communicate over the home phone line will have a 10BASE-T compatible network interface card (NIC) for interfacing with the device. A transmit/receive switch is used to switch the device between a transmit mode and a receive mode. When signal are being transmitted from a component a Manchester coder decodes signals received from the NIC. A differential converter is used to convert the differential signal received from the NIC to a single signal. A modulator is used to modulate the signal to a RF signal using a modulation scheme such as PSK, QPSK, QAM or MCM schemes. A filter is used to limit the bandwidth of the modulated signal and a driver is used to amplify the signal to match the impedance of the phone line. When the device is receiving signal from the phone lines, the signal is filtered with a bandpass filter and amplified with an amplifier. The signal is demodulated with a demodulator using the appropriate demodulation scheme. The demodulated signal is differentially encoded with a differential converter. The Manchester coder will encode the signal and send the signal to the receiving NIC.

Method and apparatus for providing a 10BASE-T compatible home network over a single twisted-pair phone line

Methods and arrangements are provided for allowing various devices to communicate data over standard twisted pair wire within a confined region, such as a home environment. The methods and arrangements employ radio frequency (RF) communication techniques to modulate and transmit data signals over existing twisted pair phone lines at RF frequencies. The RF transmitted data can be detected over limited distances by other similarly configured devices. The RF transmitted data is then received and demodulated to regenerate the original data. The methods and arrangements also allow the data transmission to be conducted in accordance with conventional CSMA/CD techniques/protocols. Thus, for example, Ethernet network configured devices can be seamlessly interconnected using the methods and arrangements of the present invention without requiring that additional and/or upgraded wiring be installed in the home environment.

Methods and arrangements for transmitting data over twisted pair wire using RF modulation techniques

An apparatus and method is disclosed for providing 10BASE-T Ethernet compatible data communications between multiple network elements, such as computers, computer peripherals, computerized appliances, and the like, over a two wire residential phone line. Each network element may include a 10BASE-T compatible network interface card (NIC) for interfacing between the network element and the residential phone line through the device of the present invention. A transmit/receive switch, set to a default receive position, is coupled between the two wire residential phone line and a NIC, each NIC having a transmit and receive wire pair. The NIC senses receive energy originating from the residential phone lines. When receive energy is no longer sensed at the NIC, a transmit signal may be generated by the NIC, placed on the transmit wire pair. A carrier sensor having a control logic unit changes the transmit/receive switch to transmit position when the transmit signal is detected, coupling transmit data through the switch to the residential phone line. The carrier sensor/control logic unit returns the transmit/receive switch to the receive position to resume carrier sensing in accord with CSMA/CD protocol specifications on the two wire medium.

Transmit/receive switch for 10BASE-T home network

A receiver for receiving an analog signal that is digitally modulated using differential binary phase shift keying (DBPSK) and demodulated by a quadrature demodulator into two signals. The receiver converts the two signals into two digital signals using 2-bit analog-to-digital converters. Samples of these digital signals are then encoded according to a maximum likelihood criteria algorithm and decisions are made based on the signal constellation, which identifies the original data transmitted.
