This invention relates to a new polyester which is particularly suitable for use in the manufacture of mass-produced articles characterised by excellent mechanical properties, in particular high tensile strength and tensile modulus, associated with a high barrier property against oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The present invention relates to a film comprising at least one biodegradable layer (i) having an elastic modulus of more than 450 MPa, consisting of a mixture of polyhydroxyalkanoate constituting the continuous phase and aliphatic and/or aliphatic-aromatic polyester constituting the discontinuous phase, and at least one coating layer (ii) preferably capable of having barrier effects against gases and liquids. The surface of said layer (i) will have a root mean square roughness Sq of more than 10 nm and less than 45 nm, measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The film is particularly suitable for use in food packaging.

The invention relates to a process for the production of 1,4-butanediol comprising the preparation of a fermentation broth comprising 1,4-butanediol from renewable sources and water, separation of a liquid fraction comprising said 1,4-butanediol and water from one or more solid fractions, said liquid fraction comprising 2-pyrrolidone in an amount higher than 80 ppm, one or more passages of the resulting liquid fraction through a bed comprising one or more cation-exchange resins thereby providing an output pH of said liquid fraction from 4 to 2, one or more passages of the resulting liquid fraction through a bed comprising one or more anion-exchange resins thereby providing an output pH of said liquid fraction from 8 to 11, and the distillation of the liquid fraction thereby provided so as to obtain a composition having a concentration of said 1,4-butanediol higher than 99.0% by weight and comprising 2-pyrrolidone in an amount lower than 6 ppm. The resulting composition should exhibit an APHA color value after ageing of less than 30.

Disclosed are aliphatic-aromatic biodegradable polyesters obtained from aliphatic dicarboxylic acids comprising azelaic acid, sebacic acid, suberic acid, brassylic acid and their esters; polyfunctional aromatic acids of renewable origin and particularly 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid, and diols, such as 1,2-ethanediol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,5-pentanediol, 1,6-haxanediol, 1,7-heptanediol, 1,8-octanediol, 1,9-nonanediol, 1,10-decanediol, 1,11-undecanediol, 1,12-dodecanediol, 1,13-tridecanediol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, dianhydrosorbitol, dianhydromannitol, dianhydroiditol, cyclohexanediol, cyclohexane-methanediol, aromatic diols such as phenols, and furan diol. Also disclosed are blends of the polyesters with other biodegradable polymers of either natural or synthetic origin. The polyesters have properties and viscosity values that make them suitable, after adjusting their molecular weight, for use in numerous practical applications such as films, injection molded products, extrusion coatings, fibers, foams, thermoformed products, extruded profiles and sheets, extrusion blow molding, injection blow molding, rotomolding, stretch blow molding.

This invention relates to a biodegradable polyester which is particularly suitable for use in the manufacture of mass-produced articles characterised by excellent mechanical properties, in particular high tensile strength, elongation and tensile modulus, associated with a high barrier property against oxygen and carbon dioxide.

A polymer composition comprising at least two polyesters having improved mechanical properties including a good balance between ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus and elongation on failure. In particular, the composition comprises from 1 to 99% by weight of at least one aromatic polyester (AP) comprising units from a diol component and units from an acid component, the units from the acid component comprising from 70 to 100 mol % of repeating units from at least one heterocyclic polyfunctional aromatic acid of renewable origin and from 99 to 1% by weight of at least a second aliphatic-aromatic polyester (AAPE). This composition is suitable for producing articles such as films, moulded objects, thermoformed objects or expanded articles. The heterocyclic aromatic acid is 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and the aliphatic-aromatic polyester is biodegradable and is a copolyester comprising repeating units from aromatic acid of the phthalic acid type, aliphatic diacids, and aliphatic diols.
