Transparent IR conductive (TIRC) coatings used for EMI protection of, for example, longwave IR windows and domes are disclosed. In some non-limiting embodiments, the TIRC coating may be a BaCuSF coating. Related systems and methods are also disclosed.

Method for protecting IR transmitting windows and domes from EMI

A method of embedding a screen in a substrate includes placing the screen on the substrate, and then melting part of the substrate, so that the screen becomes embedded in the substrate. The melting may involve heating at least part of the screen to melt part of the substrate, or directly heating the part of the substrate. The screen may be a screen of electrically-conductive material, and the heating may be Joule heating in which an electrical current is passed through the screen to heat the screen. Alternatively, the heating may involve microwave, conductive, or laser heating. The produced device of the substrate with an embedded screen may be an optical window with an embedded electromagnetic interference (EMI) screen, may be a touch screen or touch display, or may be a window with an embedded heating element, to give a few non-limiting examples.

A method of controlling a temperature profile of an optical window comprising: measuring a temperature-dependent electrical property of a thermally sensitive material included in the optical window using an embedded electromagnetic interference shield in the optical window to determine the temperature profile of the optical window, the embedded electromagnetic interference shield including a two-dimensional array of electrically conductive wires; and based on the measurements, selectively biasing at least one wire of the two-dimensional array of electrically conductive wires to locally alter the temperature-dependent electrical property of the thermally sensitive material in at least one selected spatial region of the optical window to control the temperature profile of the optical window.

A conduit is placed between a vacuum system and the open air or other gaseous environment. A laser or other excitation source is used to ionize the air on the air-side of the conduit. An axial applied electric field is used to repel positive ions from traversing the tube and reaching the region of the vacuum. Electrons are collected in the vacuum region and disposed of using a Faraday cup. The repelled ions assist in creating a counter pressure to sweep neutral atoms out of the tube and back into the ambient air. As a result, a hollow tube can connect an evacuated volume to the open air without compromising the vacuum. This is a 'windowless window.' An array of such tubes can be assembled together to increase the area of the aperture.

System and method to maintain vacuum, or to selectively exclude/admit electromagnetic energy

A window installation includes a phase-change filler material sealing an outer edge of the window, and coupling the window to a frame around the window. The filler material in a solid state rigidly holds the window in place. When the filler material is in a liquid state it allows the window to float in its coupling to the frame. There may be supports within the rigid material that contact the window, but allow the window to expand or contract by sliding along the supports. The installation may be useful in situations where the window is subjected to thermal shocks, or other sorts of heating. The installation may be used for a sensor window, and may be part of a hypersonic vehicle.

Disclosed herein is a panel assembly configured to form a mullion joint. The panel assembly can comprise a panel composed of a material substrate that, in some examples, can be transparent to radio frequency signals. The panel assembly can further comprise a first bezel configured to frame a perimeter of the panel on a first side of the panel. The panel assembly can comprise a second bezel configured to frame the perimeter of the panel on a second side of the panel opposite of the first side, the second bezel comprising cogs formed on a first edge of the second bezel. The cogs of the second bezel can be configured to receive and join with cogs of a bezel of a second panel assembly to form a mullion joint. The mullion joint can be transparent, opaque, or partially transparent to radio frequency signals and/or visible light.

Methods and apparatus for measuring and optionally adjusting the temperature profile of an optical window. In one example, an optical window with integrated temperature sensing functionality includes a first window layer of an optically transparent material, a second window layer of the optically transparent material, an electromagnetic interference shielding grid disposed between the first and second window layers and including a first electrically conductive structure and a second electrically conductive structure, and a thermally sensitive material disposed between the first and second electrically conductive structures, the thermally sensitive material having an electrical property that varies as a function of temperature.

A switchable wire includes filaments, each of which includes a heat-activated material layer that may be indirectly heated to change its state between different states having different electrical conductivity. In an example embodiment the indirect heating may be electrically resistance heating by passing electrical current through an electrically-resistive core of the filament. The heat passing through an electrically-insulative coating around the core, and into a heat-activated material layer around the electrically-insulative coating. The heat-activated material may be a chalcogenide material that is shiftable between a crystalline electrically-conducting state and an amorphous electrically-insulating state. The state of the material may be controlled by controlling the heating profile through controlling heating in the core. Many such filaments may be twisted together to form a switchable wire. Such wires may be used in any of a variety of devices where switchable electrical conductivity is desired.

Programmable wire filaments and devices

A conductive interconnect structure comprises a polymeric substrate (e.g., a thermoplastic) and a plurality of compliant conductive microstructures (e.g., conductive carbon nanofibers) embedded in the polymeric substrate. The microstructures can be arranged linearly or in a grid pattern. In response to heating, the polymeric substrate transitions from an unshrunk state to a shrunken state to move the microstructures closer together, thereby increasing an interconnect density of the compliant conductive microstructures. Thus, the gap or pitch between adjacent microstructures is reduced in response to heat-induced shrinkage of the polymeric substrate to generate finely-pitched microstructures that are densely pitched, thereby increasing the current-carrying capacity of the microstructures. The polymeric material can be heated to conform or form-fit to planar and non-planar surfaces/geometries, and can be selectively heated at various portions to tailor or customize the interconnect density of the microstructures at selected portions. Associated electrical conducting assemblies and methods are provided.

The virtual adhesion method includes increasing a magnetic characteristic of an initial structure, supporting the initial structure on a surface of a substrate, generating a magnetic field directed such that the initial structure is forced toward the surface of the substrate and forming an encapsulation, which is bound to exposed portions of the surface, around the initial structure.

A dynamic aperture is disclosed. A dynamic aperture includes a base layer, a conductive structure disposed on the base layer, and a layer of a material having a dynamically controllable electrical conductivity that is disposed over the base layer and the conductive structure. A transmission profile of the dynamic aperture is determined by a combination of the conductive structure and the layer of the material. The transmission profile is dynamically alterable by controlling the electrical conductivity of the layer of the material.
