A first unit successively transmits data blocks destined for a second unit. For at least some of the transmissions of blocks, the second unit returns an acknowledgement signal indicating whether the data block transmitted has been correctly received. The first unit transmits a redundancy block with regard to a block previously transmitted for which the acknowledgement signal received indicates incorrect reception. Each block transmitted is accompanied by an identification signal indicating whether it is a redundancy block. The first unit associates each acknowledgement signal received with a block transmitted in a temporal relation determined with the reception of this acknowledgement signal. In response to the reception of an identification signal inconsistent with an acknowledgement signal previously returned, the second unit returns to the first unit a restart command signal for the transmission of the blocks.

A scheme for multiplexing transport channels on one or several communication channels is used to operate in a normal mode and in a compressed mode which requires a lower symbol rate to provide in active periods in the communication channels. To match the symbol rate on each of the transport channels, a symbol puncturing is performed in two passes: marked symbols are introduced and are subjected, along with the other information symbols, to different operations including an interleaving, before being deleted from the transmitted sequence. Accordingly, those operations can be performed in the same manner in the normal and compressed modes, which limits the complexity of the communicating entities.

Matching a rate of data bits, in a matrix of data bits interleaved by a predetermined interleaving process, to a desired rate by deletion of redundant data bits or repetition of data bits derived from the matrix. It includes steps of determining in a non-interleaved matrix of the data bits a pattern of bits to be deleted or repeated to provide the desired data rate, decoding an address of each bit in said pattern in a manner inverse to the interleaving process to product a respective address of the bit in the matrix of interleaved data bits, and deleting or repeating the respective bit in the interleaved data bits in dependence upon the respective address. The address decoding is performed in the same manner as a coding of addresses for producing the interleaved data bits from the non-interleaved matrix of the data bits.
