The invention allows using a commodity hardware (e.g. a smartphone, a tablet, a computer . . . ) to automatically establish a high level of assurance authentication and identification of any government-issued identity document of a user (e.g. identity card, driving license, passport . . . ) and link that to digital identity counterpart. Moreover, the invention allows personalizing a material-based security feature provided of said government-issued identity document to create a link between the identity document and its data content that can be read by such a commodity hardware and serves as reliable credential for accessing a service once the material-based security feature has been authenticated via the commodity hardware and a signature of the identity data of the user has been authenticated by a server of an authority.

Operating a security checkpoint for authenticating a security article, comprising capturing biographic information from the security article; detecting a physical property of a security feature on and/or in the security article; processing the captured biographic information and the detected physical property on and/or in the security article to determine whether the security article is genuine; and operating a gate, moveable between a closed position, to be moved from the closed to the open position depending on the determination.

Simultaneous authentication of a security article and identification of the security article user

Authenticating a security article comprises capturing biographic information from the security article, detecting a physical property of a security feature on and/or in the security article, processing the captured biographic information and the detected physical property of the security feature to determine whether the security article is genuine, and outputting a signal indicative of the determination.

The present invention is related to a security element comprising a pattern of at least three layers, wherein a first layer comprises a first material which is capable of interacting with a first electromagnetic radiation but does not interact with a second and third electromagnetic radiation, a second layer comprises a second material which is capable of interacting with said second electromagnetic radiation but does not interact with a first and third electromagnetic radiation, and a third layer comprising a third material which is capable of interacting with a third electromagnetic radiation but does not interact with a first and second electromagnetic radiation, wherein said pattern provides a visual motion effect when exposed to a sequential illumination with a light source capable of separately emitting at least said first, second and third electromagnetic radiation.
