An electrically isolated tape guide that includes a tape roller having spaced apart flanges extending out from the tape roller for passing magnetic tape between the flanges, and an electrically non-conductive pin having a first end coupled to a center opening of the tape roller to allow the tape roller to rotate about the pin and a second end for coupling to a chassis of a tape drive.

Electrically isolated tape guide

A guide for guiding a magnetic data storage tape has a curved support portion for supporting a major tape surface and at least one flange adjoining the support portion. At least in a region of transition between the support portion and the at least one flange, the guide has an under coating of a diamond like carbon material, tungsten carbide, or similarly wear resistant material, and a surface coating having lower surface tension than the under coating. A tape guide apparatus and a method of making a tape guide are also disclosed.

Coatings for tape guides

A recording and/or reproducing device () includes at least one tape guide () having a guide wall () and guide flanges () projecting beyond the guide wall (). The guide wall and guide flanges are coated with a coating () of zirconium nitride or titanium nitride. This results in the tape guide having a high wear resistance and a high resistance to the deposition of material abraded from the tape.

Recording and/or reproducing device comprising a coated tape guide

A tape guide in which the corner geometry between the flanges and the hub prevents the tape from abruptly bumping the flange and in which the corner is coated with a very hard wear resistant material such as titanium aluminum nitride, tungsten carbide, silicon nitride, chromium nitride or diamond like carbon.
