Described herein are systems and methods for utilizing an embedded action card in an electronic document editable using an application. The action card comprises code that facilitates communication with an associated service, the associated service can be local to a computer executing the application or on a remote computer. The action card can provide a user with real-time information received from the associated service. The action card can receive information from the user which the action card provides to the associated service.

The present disclosure is directed to a spreadsheet application with an enhanced understanding of mathematical equations using a mathematical engine and a calculation engine. The disclosed spreadsheet application has many enhanced features, such as, but not limited to: analyzing complex equations, identifying dependencies, converting mathematical notation to spreadsheet notation, connecting variables in an equation to other cells of the spreadsheet, solving or simplifying equations, recommending different display representations of data, and a providing a math display mode.

Parameterizing and working with math equations in a spreadsheet application

Simplified data and/or syntax entry in electronic documents is provided. Custom user interface components and selectable controls may be provided that may float on a displayed document and allow for easier data or syntax input. Electronic inking gestures may be used for entry of data and/or programming syntax in an electronic scratch pad and/or directly on top of a displayed electronic document. Gestures (e.g., screen touches) may be used for selecting document components (e.g., spreadsheet ranges) followed by an interpretation by the associated application of the user's gestures. A variety of disambiguation displays, interactions and/or hints may be provided to help a user clarify ambiguous UI selections.
