A trackable medical instrument for use in a computer assisted image guided medical and surgical navigation systems that generate images during medical and surgical procedures, includes a guide member having an emitter array for being tracked by the system and a drive shaft contained within the guide member having a proximal and a distal end, the drive shaft being rotatable within the guide member while being fixable axially inside the guide member, the proximal end of the drive shaft having a first connector for interchangeably receiving at least one drive source, and the distal end having a second connector for interchangeably receiving at least one instrument tip.

Image guided awl/tap/screwdriver

A system is provided to align a surgical guide instrument over a burr hole in a patient's body. Adjustments of a surgical instrument can be made in x, y, z, and angular directions using the system. An instrument guide unit can include an instrument guide for guiding a surgical instrument into the body of a patient and a base unit operative to be secured to the body near an area in which surgery is to occur. The base unit is coupled to the instrument guide. An adjustment mechanism, coupled to the base unit and the instrument guide, is operative to adjust the instrument guide in lateral directions with respect the surface of the area.

The introduction apparatus is provide with a gripping nose actuated by axial movement of a clamping shaft in an outer sleeve. The clamping shaft further includes an axial cannula for passage of a fastener to the implant.

Generally, the present invention is directed to a method and system for a aligning surgical guide instrument over a burr hole in a patient's body. More particularly, the present invention is directed to a stand-alone instrument guidance unit that is attachable to a patient's skull. Adjustments of a surgical instrument can be made in x, y, z, and angular directions using the system and method of the present invention. In one aspect of the present invention, an instrument guide unit includes an instrument guide for guiding a surgical instrument into the body of a patient and a base unit operative to be secured to the body in an area in which surgery is to occur. The base unit is coupled to the instrument guide. An adjustment mechanism, coupled to the base unit and the instrument guide, is operative to adjust the instrument guide in lateral directions with respect the surface of the area. The adjustment mechanism is operative to adjust the instrument guide in x and y directions. The adjustment mechanism includes an x direction control mechanism for adjusting the instrument in an x direction and a y direction control mechanism for adjusting the instrument in a y direction. The y direction control mechanism may be coupled to the x direction control mechanism. The positional movement of the surgical instrument in the z direction may be tracked by sensing the location of a transducer coupled to the surgical instrument.

Instrument guidance method and system for image guided surgery

Generally, the present invention is directed to a method and system for a aligning surgical guide instrument over a burr hole in a patient's body. The adjustment mechanism includes an x direction control mechanism for adjusting the instrument in an x direction and a y direction control mechanism for adjusting the instrument in a y direction. The y direction control mechanism may be coupled to the x direction control mechanism. The positional movement of the surgical instrument in the z direction may be tracked by sensing the location of a transducer coupled to the surgical instrument.

A brain lead anchoring system is described which allows for installation of a brain stimulation lead or a drug delivery catheter without the lead or catheter ever being unsupported during installation so that the lead or catheter does not move during the anchoring procedure. An anchor assembly contains an anchoring mechanism that is biased in the closed or anchoring position and is only open to allow installation of a lead when it is mated to an introducer instrument, which has prongs that open the anchoring mechanism. Once the lead is appropriately positioned within the brain and while the lead is still supported by the installation guiding device, the introducer instrument is withdrawn from the anchoring mechanism, which thus allows the anchoring mechanism to return to its closed position. A locking cap covers the aperture through the anchor assembly into the skull and mechanically ensures that the anchoring mechanism remains in the closed position. The anchor assembly also has channels in its top surface within which the lead may be inserted so that the lead may be lain flat on the surface of the patient's skull.

Anchoring system for a brain lead

A method and apparatus for positioning a surgical instrument during stereotactic surgery using a guidance fixture. The guidance fixture includes an upper portion, which includes an instrument guide for moving the surgical instrument along a constrained trajectory relative to the upper portion, and includes an adjustable base supporting the upper portion, which includes a mounting base and an adjustment mechanism. The adjustable base can include a rotating collar attached to the mounting base and a pivoting collar coupling the rotating collar to the upper portion. A remote sensing device, such as a camera array sensing LEDs on the fixture, is used to determine the orientation of the upper portion of the guidance assembly in relation to the body.

Instrument guidance for stereotactic surgery

A device for holding in compression, a bone graft placed in the space between two vertebral bodies and from which a diseased or injured vertebral body has been removed, comprises an elongate space-spanning plate of implant grade material having a concavo-convex cross section, with an integral prong at each end to be driven into the vertebral bodies. Each prong has a proximal portion and a distal portion, with each portion having an inboard surface facing an inboard surface of the other prong, the inboard surfaces converging as they extend from the distal ends of the prongs toward the concave surface of the plate to urge the vertebral bodies toward each other as the prongs are driven into them. The outboard surface at the proximal portion of the prong is parallel to the inboard surface and at the distal portion converges from the proximal portion to intersection with the inboard surface at the distal end of the prong. The plate has two holes in it adjacent each end for reception of bone screws but which are used during installation of the staple for reception of the locating posts of an impactor tool to properly position the tool for striking it with a mallet to drive the staple prongs into the vertebra. Consequently, as the staple is installed by striking the impactor, the prongs enter and become embedded and are anchored in the vertebral bodies adjacent the graft and urge the bodies toward each other, placing the graft under compression. Then bone screws are installed through the plate into the vertebral bodies to permanently anchor the plate and immobilize the two vertebral bodies relative to each other.
