Authorization verification systems and methods are described that store a record of an authorization determination performed at a point of sale or other point of control. The system receives authorization information for an individual indicative of the individual's authorization to purchase a product or service, to enter a location, to attend an event, or to otherwise participate in an encounter whose access is limited to authorized individuals. In one embodiment, the authorization verification system receives information relating to the individual's age via an electronic scanning of a driver's license or other identification card, or by other methods, and uses the birth date information to calculate the customer's current age. The current age can be displayed on an existing display of a point-of-sale device or other display. A record of the authorization can be stored as part of a transaction record that can subsequently be retrieved to verify that an authorization determination for the encounter was carried out.

Systems and methods for verifying authorization

The present invention includes transaction processing systems that process transactions from merchant systems designed to convert the presentation of a transponder device into electronic debits from a checking account. The transaction processing systems also can provide risk assessment, validation or user data and/or MICR data, and/or transaction guarantee services.

Systems and methods are described for better assessing risk associated with cashing second-party checks and other negotiable instruments. The systems and methods make use of information about authenticating marks, such as watermarks, bar codes, insignia, background patterns, and the like, from a check in order to better assess the legitimacy and cashability of the check. In various embodiments, information about an authenticating mark may be compared to stored information about an expected configuration for the authenticating mark. In various embodiments, a gradated risk score may be generated based at least in part on the comparison. In various embodiments, the risk score may be combined with risk scores that are descriptive of other aspects of a check cashing transaction to calculate a risk score for the transaction as a whole. In some embodiments, the transaction risk score may be used to generate an accept/decline recommendation for the transaction.

Systems and methods for assessing the risk of a financial transaction using authenticating marks

Among other things, the present invention provides a variety of systems and methods for configuring and/or providing a configurable point-of-sale system. Various methods of the present invention include providing a point-of-sale device and coupling it to a communication network. One or more transaction systems are accessible to the point-of-sale device via the transaction network, instructions are loaded to the memory of the point-of-sale device allowing it to access the transaction system. Various systems include a plurality of point-of-sale devices communicably coupled to various transaction systems via a communication network. The point-of-sale devices can be configurable to access one or more of the various transaction systems.

Systems and methods for configuring a point-of-sale system

Systems and methods are described for building, maintaining, and using a repository of information about payors of second-party checks presented at a check-cashing entity for cashing. In various embodiments, the repository comprises stored information useful for determining the location of a payor of a second-party check. In one embodiment, information from the check that identifies an account on which the check is drawn, such as magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) line information from a paycheck, is used to access a repository of employer location information. In one embodiment, the payor location information is used to determine a proximity between the payor location and the check cashing entity location. In one embodiment, when a check is presented for which stored payor location information is not available, identifying information about the payor and/or the payor location is requested and is added to the repository.

Systems and methods for identifying payor location based on transaction data

The invention involves a system and a method of approving a money limit of check cashing for a time period during which a check writer may cash checks up to the limit. The invention provides for an improvement of approving a money limit of check cashing in order to provide in advance a check cashing limit for at least one period of time. The invention includes storing historical check writing information of check writers, receiving identification information to access respective check writing information, processing the respective check writing information to determine a score for the check writer, classifying the check writer in a predetermined category, and determining the limit over the time period during which the check writer may cash checks up to the limit based on the category in which the check writer is classified. The invention further includes declining the check writer from cashing checks for the time period of the check writer is classified in one category, and approving the check writer to cash checks for the limit over the time period if the check writer is classified in another category.

Authorization verification systems and methods are described that determine whether an authorization check is to be performed in conjunction with an online purchase or other electronic commerce transaction, and, if the authorization check is to be performed, that check the authorization of an individual wishing to participate in the online transaction and that store a retrievable record of the authorization check. The system receives authorization information for the individual that is indicative of the individual's authorization to purchase a product or service online, or to otherwise participate in an electronic commerce encounter whose access is limited to authorized individuals. In one embodiment, authorization for making a purchase is limited to individuals above an age threshold, and the authorization verification system receives information relating to the individual's age via an electronic scanning of a driver's license or other identification card, or by other methods, and uses the birth date information to calculate the customer's current age. The invention involves a system and a method of determining collectability of a check writer from a database including negative information of a plurality of check writers for check writing approval or denial. The invention provides for an improvement of determining collectability of a check writer in order to more effectively distinguish between collectible check writers and non-collectible check writers. The invention includes receiving the information of the check writer, processing the information to determine a score of the check writer, classifying the check writer within a predetermined category, and removing or retaining the check writer information from the database, depending on the category within which the check writer is classified.

Systems and methods for performing transactions at a point-of-sale

Methods and systems coordinate an Internet-based financial transaction between an Internet merchant and a customer. A first information packet is received with a payment network from the Internet merchant. The first information packet has a credential assigned to the customer and transaction information specifying at least a cost of the Internet-based financial transaction. With the payment network, account information is determined that identifies a financial account maintained by the customer at a financial institution and authorization information that allows debit access to the identified financial account. A second information packet that includes the transaction information, the account information, and the authorization information is generated with the payment network. The second information packet is transmitted with the payment network to the financial institution with a request to perform a debit transaction from the identified financial account for the specified cost of the Internet-based financial transaction.

The present invention includes a merchant system that recognizes virtually any payment device or technology that uses electronic check processing as a payment mechanism. For example, the merchant system associates presentation of the payment device with information used to electronically debit a checking account, such as MICR data, and submits the same to a transaction processor capable of settling electronic debit transactions.

An integrated point of sale terminal for processing multiple payment types including payment by check includes a compact housing, a processor, and memory. The housing has a base shaped to sit on a merchant counter and has a document slot for receiving a check.
