The present invention, a powder composition for making powder coatings comprising one or more than one curable polymer or resin and an agglomerate of a core-shell polymer, wherein the agglomerate of a core-shell polymer has an average particle size of from 5 to 190 microns, preferably from 10 to 127 microns. The powders in accordance with the present invention provide a cured powder coating that is flexible, smooth, and which may be applied in a thickness of only from 0.3 to 8 mils. In a preferred embodiment of making a powder in accordance with the present invention, the agglomerate is cryoground to form a reduced agglomerate prior to adding it into a powder as a post-blend or a powder-forming mixture as a preblend. The preferred core-shell polymer for use in accordance with the present invention comprises an acrylic impact modifier having a poly(methyl methacrylate) shell and a poly(butyl acrylate) core. Further, the preferred curable polymer or resin powder is an epoxy resin, wherein the powder composition is a low temperature curing one component powder composition which cures at from 107 to 149 degrees C.

Smooth, flexible powder coatings

The present invention provides polymeric material compositions having excellent white light transmission that is substantially free of color over long light path lengths. This invention also provides polymeric material compositions that provide for the transmission of light having a controlled color when illuminated with a white light source.

Light pipe composition

Acrylic light pipe has adequate thermal and photo-thermal stability for many purposes, but is deficient in maintaining clarity, color, and good optical properties under conditions of exposure to high temperatures, especially in combination with exposure for lengthy periods to passage of light. Improved thermal stability, as reflected in reduced color formation, can be imparted by adjusting the polymerization conditions to produce the uncured core polymer of the core/clad construction with a much reduced terminal vinyl content, preferably below 0.5 vinyl groups/1000 monomer units. This process improvement, in combination with selected addition of a combination of certain hindered phenols and hydrolytically stable organic phosphites, together produce a substantial improvement in the resistance to discoloration under photo-thermal conditions, while maintaining the resistance to discoloration under thermal conditions. The known process conditions which do not yield lower terminal vinyl content, in combination with the selected additives, also produce acrylic light pipe with greatly improved photo-thermal stability.

Acrylic light pipe as described in Bigley et al., U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,406,641 and 5,485,541, has adequate thermal stability for many purposes. It has been found that improved thermal stability, as reflected in color formation, can be imparted by adjusting the polymerization conditions to produce the uncured core polymer of the core/clad construction with a much reduced terminal vinyl content, preferably below 0.5 vinyl groups/1000 monomer units.

This invention provides an improved adhesive layer for multi-layer films and bottles, the adhesive layer being a graft copolymer of a polyolefin backbone with a methyl methacrylate graft. The graft copolymer sufficiently improves the compatibility between barrier resins and polyolefins to permit the production of monolithic or single layer bottles comprised of a blend of those three components. The resultant products have improved physical properties while retaining acceptable permeability to gases.

A novel graft copolymer capable of imparting to a polyolefin when blended therewith high tensile modulus and high sag resistance without increasing melt viscosity, and a method of making the same. The graft copolymer is a polyolefin having a relatively high weight-average molecular weight methacrylate polymer grafted thereto. The graft copolymer is formed by dissolving or swelling a non-polar polyolefin in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, heating to dissolve the polyolefin, and while stirring the mixture, adding a methacrylate monomer, together with an initiator to produce a constant, low concentration of radicals, to form a graft copolymer with a high molecular weight polymer chain covalently bonded or grafted to the polyolefin backbone. The graft copolymer can be separated from the solvent, isolated by volatilizing the solvent, for example in a devolatilizing extruder, and extruded into a desired shape such as a sheet, tube or the like. This graft copolymer can be blended with a poolyolefin matrix. The blend exhibits improved physical properties in the melt, upon cooling, and in the solid state, and is useful in cast and oriented films, solid extruded rod and profile, foamed rod, profile and sheet, blown bottles and the like. The graft copolymer further improves compatibility in a wide range of polymer blends.

Graft copolymers and blends thereof with polyolefins

The addition of a polyolefin-acrylic graft copolymer to blends of polyolefin and core-shell polymers improves compatibility and allows core-shell polymers to be used as processing and performance modifiers polyolefins. Generally the compatibilizing additive is a graft copolymer of a polyolefin and a methacrylate. More specifically, the graft copolymer is derived from at least about 80% of a monomer of a methacrylic ester of the formula CH.sub.2 .dbd.C(CH.sub.3)COOR, where R may be alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl, substituted or unsubstituted, and less than 20%, based on a total monomer weight, of an acrylic or styrenic monomer copolymerizable with the methacrylic ester grafted on to a non polar polyolefin trunk, so that at least one chain is a polymer with a weight average molecular weight greater than about 20,000 and is present in a weight ratio with the polyolefin trunk of from about 1:9 to about 4:1. A typical composition may contain about 20% core-shell modifier, about 10% compatibilizer, the balance being polyolefin.

A typical composition may contain about 20% core-shell modifier, about 10% compatibilizer, the balance being polyolefin.

This invention relates to polyaminoester thermosetting resins prepared by reacting polyalkylene maleate oligomers with polyfunctional amines via a Michael type addition reaction. The reaction is preferably conducted by a RIM process. Alpha, beta ethylenically unsaturated monomers, which are slow to react with amines, may be added to the reaction to copolymerize with the maleate functionality in a post cure step. The polyaminoester thermosetting resins are useful as plastics, coatings, resin modifiers, and elastomers.
