An earphone has a body housing a transducer that is capable of generating an acoustic signal and directing the acoustic signal to an outlet in the body, the body being positionable in, on, or near an ear of user so that the acoustic signal can be directed into the ear canal of the user. The earphone also has an ear coupling mechanism comprising a sealing mechanism with a sealing member that is adapted to contact a portion of the ear of the user to at least partially create a seal between the ear canal and the external environment and a venting mechanism capable of venting air between the ear canal and the external environment, the venting mechanism comprising an air conduit that is adapted to communicate on one end with the ear canal and at another end with the external environment so that air can flow through the conduit to equalize a pressure differential across the sealing mechanism. The air conduit is sized and shaped so as to provide an improved audio performance over an earphone without the air conduit.

Pressure equalizing earphone

An ear tip connects to a nozzle of an earphone. The ear tip comprises a body having a lumen extending from a rearward opening to a forward opening, the rearward opening being sized and dimensioned to connect to the nozzle so that sound transmitted out of the nozzle passes through the lumen and is transmitted out the forward opening. The body comprises an inner core forming at least a portion of the lumen and an outer cover covering at least a portion of the inner core, wherein the inner core is made of material sufficiently rigid to avoid deformation when the ear tip is inserted into the ear canal of a user and the outer cover is made of a material less rigid than the material of the inner core and capable of being compressed and deformed by the ear canal when inserted thereinto. In one version, the inner core and the outer cover are arranged so that when the ear tip is inserted into an ear canal and the outer cover is deformed by the ear canal, the forward opening has an area equal to or greater than the area of the rearward opening. In another version, the inner core has a forward end opening larger than a rearward end opening of the inner core. In another version, the outer cover comprises a rearward segment, a forward segment sized or shaped differently than the rearward segment, and a connecting portion connecting the rearward segment and the forward segment and which allows the rearward segment and the forward segment to flex relative to one another.

Methods and systems for providing secondary power to aircraft systems. In one embodiment, an aircraft system architecture for providing power to an environmental control system includes an electric generator operably coupled to a jet engine. The jet engine can be configured to provide propulsive thrust to the aircraft, and the electric generator can be configured to receive shaft power from the jet engine. The environmental control system can be configured to provide outside air to a passenger cabin of the aircraft in the absence of bleed air from the jet engine.

Electric-based secondary power system architectures for aircraft

An all electric air conditioning system for an aircraft, wherein the aircraft defines an interior volume having conditioned air at a first pressure. A compressor is provided and is operable to compress supply air to a second pressure. The compressor being operated in response to an electrical drive motor. A passage fluidly couples the compressor and the interior volume of the aircraft. A heat dissipating device, such as a heat exchanger, is positioned in the passage to extract heat energy from the supply air. This arrangement permits conditioning of air within the aircraft without using bleed air from the engines. The use of bleed air results in a significant amount of fuel burn. An optional conditioned air recovery system may be coupled to the interior volume of the fuselage to direct at least a portion of the conditioned air from the interior volume back for further conditioning and use.
