An internal combustion engine includes an engine block including a cylinder having a cylinder axis, a piston positioned within the cylinder and configured to reciprocate along the cylinder axis, a crankshaft configured to rotate about a crankshaft axis, an air-fuel mixing device configured to provide an air-fuel mixture to the cylinder, a cyclonic air filter positioned entirely below the air-fuel mixing device, and a duct coupling the cyclonic air filter to the air-fuel mixing device and configured to provide air filtered by the cyclonic air filter to the air-fuel mixing device.

An engine assembly includes an air-cooled engine and an external oil reservoir. The engine includes a vertically-oriented crankshaft a crankcase cover having a front portion and a rear portion, wherein the front portion of the crankcase cover and the cylinder head are located forward of a vertical plane that includes the crankshaft axis, a return pump housing formed in the exterior of the crankcase cover, a return pump positioned in the return pump housing, and a return pump inlet formed through the crankcase cover, wherein the return pump inlet is located in the front portion of the crankcase cover and the return pump inlet is located closer to the camshaft than to the crankshaft. The external oil reservoir includes an oil tank and an oil filter assembly.

A choke system for an internal combustion engine includes a carburetor having a choke valve disposed in a passage; a cooling fan providing a variable air flow; an air vane moveable in response to the variable air flow; an air vane linkage coupling the air vane to the choke valve, the air vane linkage operating the choke valve by the movement of the air vane; a manually operated choke control; an override linkage coupling the choke control to the choke valve; and a thermally responsive member configured to engage the override linkage to retain the choke in a partially open position above a threshold temperature. The choke control may be moved to a first position in which the choke control overrides the thermally responsive member and the air vane linkage to maintain the choke valve in a closed position.

An engine assembly includes a crankcase, shaft, blower housing, and cooling fan. The shaft is rotatably coupled to the crankcase and defines a rotational axis. The blower housing includes an internal space. The cooling fan is disposed within the internal space, includes a plate defining an upper surface, and is positioned to rotate with the shaft about the rotational axis. The cooling fan includes a band having an inner band radius and an outer band radius. The cooling fan includes a plurality of reversed fins extending between the band and the upper surface and between a root adjacent to the rotational axis and a tip adjacent to the outer band radius, each fin offset at an angle measured in a counterclockwise direction from a plane passing through the rotational axis and the tip to a plane passing through the root and the tip when viewed from above the cooling fan.

An engine assembly includes a crankcase, a shaft, a housing, and a cooling fan. The shaft is coupled to the crankcase and defines a rotational axis. The housing has a sidewall that defines an internal space. The cooling fan is disposed at least partially within the internal space and is coupled to the shaft. The cooling fan includes a plate defining an upper surface and a lower surface. The plate is positioned to rotate with the shaft about the rotational axis. The cooling fan also includes a band that has an inner band radius and an outer band radius. The cooling fan also includes a plurality of reversed fins coupled to the band and extending from the upper surface of the plate, further radially outward from the rotational axis than the band.

An engine assembly includes an engine, an external oil reservoir, a supply pump, and a return pump. The engine includes an oil gallery configured to distribute oil and a crankcase chamber. The external oil reservoir includes an oil tank defining an oil chamber and an oil filter assembly including a housing at least partially defining a filter chamber, and a filter positioned within the filter chamber. The supply pump is in fluid communication with the oil chamber and the oil gallery and the supply pump is configured to draw oil from the oil chamber and provide pressurized oil to the oil gallery. The return pump in fluid communication with the crankcase chamber and the filter chamber and the return pump is configured to draw oil from the crankcase chamber and provide pressurized oil to the filter chamber.

A choke system for an internal combustion engine includes a carburetor having an air intake, a choke valve disposed in the air intake, and a choke lever coupled to the choke valve, wherein the choke valve is movable between a closed position and an open position, a mechanical linkage coupled to the choke lever, and a solenoid attached to the carburetor and coupled to the mechanical linkage so activation of the solenoid moves the choke valve, wherein the solenoid is activated in response to activation of a starter system of an internal combustion engine, thereby moving the choke valve via the mechanical linkage to the closed position.
