Various embodiments of the present invention relate to an apparatus and method for reverse shoulder arthroplasty (e.g., reverse total shoulder arthroplasty). In one specific example, a glenoid component used to resurface the scapula may be provided. Of note, unlike traditional total shoulder arthroplasty the glenoid component in a reverse shoulder is convex rather than concave; it acts as a physical stop to prevent the superior migration of the humeral head&#x2014;a typical occurrence in patients suffering from rotator cuff tear arthropathy (CTA).

Reverse shoulder prosthesis

A handling tool for coupling to a cutting guide includes a substantially elongate first end shaped to be grasped by human hand. The tool includes at least two mating tines, disposed at a second end of the tool. The mating tines are biased to move toward each other and are forced apart from each other by a cam portioned therebetween. The mating tines each include a mating means for mating the tool with the cutting guide.

Intramedullary alignment guide tool

A tool is disclosed in which components can be grasped and secured using a single actuation motion. A mechanical system converts a single actuation motion into sequential motions at least in part mutually orthogonal. The advantages of this system are one-handed operation and ability to accommodate variations in dimensions of the components to be secured in the tool. A particular device is disclosed which is used in the handling of human prosthesis components during surgery.

Medical appliance tool providing one hand actuation

An apparatus and method of use directed towards protective and supportive hole caps for prosthetic implant devices are disclosed. The present hole cap supports a prosthesis and provides a physical barrier between the prosthesis and underlying bone matter. In a preferred embodiment, the hole cap includes at least one compression spring formed along the perimeter of the cap. The compression spring maintains the hole cap within a counter-bored hole after the hole cap is inserted within the counter-bored hole. In accordance with the present invention, the compression spring deflects slightly towards the center of the hole cap when the cap is inserted within the counter-bored hole. The compression spring provides sufficient compression force against the sidewalls of the counter-bored hole to thereby hold the hole cap in place within the hole. The counter-bored hole is preferably shaped to snugly receive the outer perimeter of the hole cap. Alternative configurations are disclosed for maintaining the hole cap within an associated hole formed in the implant. The hole caps are used for covering holes in implants affixed to a patient's body with or without the use of bone screws. The hole caps prevent the flow of unwanted debris into the counter-bored hole and into the patient's underlying bone matter.

Hole caps for prosthetic implants

An intramedullary alignment guide and method for use thereof are disclosed for accurately preparing and shaping the distal femur end surface to receive a knee prosthesis for securement thereto. The guide references the femur intramedullary canal to ensure that a distal femoral resector is properly positioned at a selected angle with respect to a patient's mechanical axis. In the preferred embodiment, the intramedullary alignment guide includes an opening for inserting an intramedullary rod therethrough and into the intramedullary canal of a patient. The present guide includes an adjustment mechanism which allows a surgeon to quickly and easily deflect an attached distal femoral resector into a desired angular displacement with respect to intramedullary canal. In accordance with the preferred method, the distal femoral resector angled with respect to the intramedullary canal so that a cut can be made in a patient's distal femur end which is perpendicular with the patient's mechanical axis. The present guide can be used on patients having various anatomies, and in operations involving both the right and left legs. A sighting tool is also disclosed which allows a surgeon to externally verify that the distal femoral resector is properly aligned with the patient's mechanical axis.
