Dried hemoactive materials comprise both a cross-linked biologically compatible polymer and a non-cross-linked biologically compatible polymer. The cross-linked polymer is selected to form a hydrogel when exposed to blood. The non-cross-linked polymer is chosen to solubilize relatively rapidly when exposed to blood. The non-cross-linked polymer serves as a binder for holding the materials in desired geometries, such as sheets, pellets, plugs, or the like. Usually, the cross-linked polymer will be present in a particulate or fragmented form. The materials are particularly suitable for hemostasis and drug delivery.

Hemoactive compositions and methods for their manufacture and use

An IOL compression chamber for folding an IOL includes a hollow chamber having a loading area, a staging area and a distal tip. The loading area has a distally extending slot in the wall which allows for easy removal of a forceps holding the IOL from the chamber following insertion of the IOL into the chamber with the forceps. The staging area holds the IOL in a folded state until the chamber is placed into an IOL insertion instrument having a plunger which forces the IOL distally out of the staging area and into the eye through the distal tip.

Apparatus and method for preparing an intraocular lens for insertion

Cross-linked hydrogels comprise a variety of biologic and non-biologic polymers, such as proteins, polysaccharides, and synthetic polymers. Such hydrogels preferably have no free aqueous phase and may be applied to target sites in a patient's body by extruding the hydrogel through an orifice at the target site. Alternatively, the hydrogels may be mechanically disrupted and used in implantable articles, such as breast implants. When used in vivo, the compositions are useful for controlled release drug delivery, for inhibiting post-surgical spinal and other tissue adhesions, for filling tissue divots, tissue tracts, body cavities, surgical defects, and the like.

Fragmented polymeric compositions and methods for their use

Molecular cross-linked gels comprise a variety of biologic and non-biologic polymers, such as proteins, polysaccharides, and synthetic polymers. Such molecular gels may be applied to target sites in a patient's body by extruding the gel through an orifice at the target site. Alternatively, the gels may be mechanically disrupted and used in implantable articles, such as breast implants. When used in vivo, the compositions are useful for inhibiting post-surgical spinal and other tissue adhesions, for filling tissue divots, tissue tracts, body cavities, surgical defects, and the like.

Gelatin film compositions are useful for immobilization over tissue, usually by the application of energy to the films. Exemplary films comprise cross-linked and non-cross-linked granular and non-granular gelatin sheets, typically including a plasticizer. The gelatin films are dry, thin, and preferably meet certain pliability, elasticity, melting temperature, and other criteria. Methods are described for producing these films from collagen. Methods are further described for applying these films to tissue.

Films having improved characteristics and methods for their preparation

Tissue adhesions are inhibited by applying and immobilizing a solid preformed matrix material over a target region, such as a surgical site, in a first tissue surface. The matrix material may be any continuous solid material, such as a sheet or film. After applying the material to the target region, the material is immobilized by applying energy over at least a portion of the surface of the matrix material which causes the material to fuse to the underlying tissue. The matrix material is preferably bioabsorbable so that it is resorbed by the body over time. Suitable matrix materials include proteins, polysaccharrides, and synthetic polymers.

Methods and compositions for inhibiting tissue adhesion

Wounds in lung tissue are closed in a two step method consisting essentially of applying fasteners to a region adjacent to the wound, wherein the fasteners may cause penetrations. The fasteners are present in a preformed layer of collagen, fibrin, fibrinogen, elastin, albumin, or a combination thereof, and energy is applied to the region to fuse the material to the tissue and seal perforations in the tissue.

Apparatus for preparing an intraocular lens for insertion

An apparatus in which a deformable or compressible intraocular lens can be received and staged for insertion into a patient's eye. The apparatus has an elongated compression chamber with proximal and distal ends and a longitudinal passageway, having an inner surface, extending between the ends. The portion of the passageway adjacent to the proximal end forms a loading area in which the passageway gradually decreases in size for causing an intraocular lens to be deformed or compressed as the lens is moved along the passageway. A staging area having a top and bottom passageway wall, communicates with the loading area with the passageway wall including alignment means for retaining the intraocular lens in a deformed or compressed condition. A portion of the passageway is sized to retain the intraocular lens in the deformed or compressed condition. A portion of the passageway defining the loading area comprises a surface which includes an opening and a slot or groove for permitting withdrawal of forceps used for pushing the intraocular lens through the loading area and into the staging area for deforming or compressing the lens.

A biocompatible corneal inlay ring apparatus for altering the curvature of the central optic zone of the cornea of the eye without intrusion into this optic zone, comprising a continuous ring of a fixed diameter greater than that of the optic zone, of a thickness and geometry such that the curvature of the central optic zone is flattened to an extent appropriate to the refractive correction desired, and of a composition having a refractive index within about 2.0% of that of the corneal tissue.

Method of using a corneal ring inlay

A low or high refractive index corneal inlay optical lens adapted to be inserted singly or multiply between the layers of a cornea to correct refractive errors in eyesight, wherein the implanted lens is a solid transparent uncoated lens having no apertures therethrough, of a diameter less than that of the optic zone of the eye under normal light or bright light conditions, such that the movement of fluids, nutrients and gases throughout the corneal layers is unimpeded, and wherein the composition of the lens or lenses relative to that of the surrounding stromal tissue are such that multiple refractive indices may be created and multiple focal corrections are possible.

Corneal inlay lenses

A low or high refractive index corneal inlay optical lens adapted to be inserted between the layers of a cornea to correct refractive errors in eyesight, wherein the implanted lens is of a size or configuration that permits unimpeded passage of nutrients and gases throughout the corneal layers and wherein the composition of the lens relative to that of the surrounding stromal tissue is such that multi-refractive indices may be created and multi-focal corrections are possible.

Method of implanting corneal inlay lenses smaller than the optic zone

An ultraviolet light absorbing silicone composition comprising silicone elastomer and, covalently bonded thereto, ultraviolet light absorbing component derived from one or more vinyl functional, polymerizable ultraviolet absorbing monomers having the following structures: ##STR1## and mixtures thereof, wherein X is selected from the group consisting of H, alkoxy radicals and halogen, R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of H and alkyl radicals, provided that at least one of X and R.sub.1 is other than H, and R.sub.2 and R are independently selected from organic radicals with a terminal double bond.

Ultraviolet light absorbing silicone compositions

The preparation of particular fluorescent silane dye compositions is disclosed. These silane dye compositions have particular utility as reactants in the preparation of silicone polymeric fluorescent dyes which can be ideally used as chemical indicators in biological sensors.
