An inerting and venting system for an aircraft. The inerting and venting system includes a tank containing fluid to be inerted, a mixer including an operating flow path and a mixing flow path, a vent line fluidly connecting ambient atmosphere to the operating flow path of the mixer, and an inert gas line fluidly connecting an inert gas source to the mixing flow path of the mixer. The mixing flow path and the operating flow path are arranged in a coflowing configuration such that ambient air communicated by the operating flow path mixes in a coflowing manner with inert gas communicated by the mixing flow path and the coflowed mixture is directed into the tank. The inerting and venting system may include a first valve for controlling flow of vent air from ambient atmosphere to the tank, and a second valve for controlling flow of inert gas from an inert gas source to the tank. A valve adjuster is configured to passively adjust the first and second valves in response to a pressure differential between the ambient atmosphere and the tank, and to control ratio of flow in response to oxygen concentration in the inert gas or the tank ullage gas.

Inerting and venting system

A laminar flow control surface having a foraminous section (also referred to below as a foraminous portion,) of a skin () of a vehicle to permit low temperature fluid to flow through the foraminous section to a heat exchanger (), to reduce drag of the vehicle and to dissipate heat from the heat exchanger. The foraminous section () and the heat exchanger () synergistically reduce drag and transfer heat from the heat exchanger. The vehicle may be an aircraft with a laminar flow control system including a foraminous portion on a leading edge of the aircraft. While the aircraft is in flight, a portion of air impinging near the foraminous portion may flow laminarly about the leading edge, and another portion of the impingingair may flow through the foraminous portion to a heat exchanger to transfer heat from the heat exchanger to the air.

Heat exchanger for laminar-flow aircraft

An impingement cooling system for cooling electronic components includes a nozzle array having a plurality of nozzles in fluid communication with a source of cooling fluid, each nozzle including a deflection structure that deforms above a threshold temperature. A plurality of thermally conductive pins respectively are in thermal contact with the deflection structures and conduct heat from at least one of the electronic components to the deflection structures. When a heated nozzle within the nozzle array reaches a temperature above the threshold temperature due to heat conducted from the respective thermally conductive pin, the deflection structure of the heated nozzle deforms from a closed position to an open position to permit cooling fluid to impinge upon the electronic component. The deflection structure may be a deflection plate formed of a bimetallic material having layers of different thermal expansion coefficients, or a thermally responsive two-way shape memory material.

Passively controlled smart microjet cooling array

A hydrodynamic energy recovery system for effecting mixing of gases within a headspace of a liquid-containment vessel containing a liquid enables mixing of the gases by converting energy of moving or sloshing liquid in a liquid-filled lower portion of the vessel into energy for moving the gases. The system includes (1) a hydro-driven actuator that is movably driven in response to the movement of the liquid in the vessel, (2) a mixing device driven by the actuator such that motion of the mixing device effects mixing of the gases contained in the headspace above the liquid, and (3) a motion converter for converting motion of the actuator into motion for driving the mixing device. The mixing device can be driven without the need to run electrical power within the vessel and without the transfer of motion through an external wall of the vessel.

Tank sloshing energy recovery system

A method and assembly for generating a hydrodynamic air bearing is described, wherein at least one rotor is rotated to force air through channels defined in a platen located adjacent to a linear belt and the forced air is directed to the linear belt. The method includes rotating at least one rotor with a motor such that the rotor forces air through channels defined in a platen, and the air is directed toward a linear belt. The assembly includes a housing in which a platen, rotors, and a bearing plate are located.
