A lighting function for assisting a driver when driving a motor vehicle is provided by activating the lighting function, determining a light distribution according to the lighting function, determining a perspective of a driver of the motor vehicle and controlling a projection device of the motor vehicle in such a way that the projection device outputs light according to light distribution. Topography data from an environment in a field of view of the driver and/or object data from an object in the surroundings in the field of view of the driver are acquired, and the light distribution is determined as a function of the topography data and/or object data and the perspective of the driver.

Providing a lighting function for assisting a driver when driving a motor vehicle

An illumination device is provided having a light source, a light exit aperture, and a reflector unit that is arranged between the light source and the light exit aperture and can be controlled in terms of its reflection position by means of a control signal, wherein the reflector unit is designed to assume (via an operating control signal) an operating position in which light emitted by the light source can be deflected to the light exit aperture, and wherein the illumination device has an absorber element which is designed to absorb received light, wherein the reflector unit is designed to assume (via an absorber signal) an absorber position in which the light emitted by the light source and/or light entering into the illumination device from the outside through the light exit aperture can be deflected to the absorber element.

The invention is directed to methods and devices to improve light patterns used to inform or assist an observer or a driver. The invention is related to an illuminating device and to a method for projecting a pre-definable light pattern using the illuminating device of the vehicle into an area surrounding the vehicle. According to the invention, a projection surface is determined in the area surrounding the vehicle, a position of a predefined observer has been determined or provided, and a light unit of the illuminating device is controlled pixel-wise according to the determined projection surface and the determined position of the predefined observer in order to produce the pre-definable light pattern.
