A method of intercepting and cementing an existing well is disclosed that includes supplying an alignable guidance device including a tube section and a casing milling shoe. The alignable guidance device includes a pre-contoured tube within the casing milling shoe that terminates in an exit point and guidance sensors. The method also includes running the alignable guidance device into a wellbore and aligning the alignable guidance device relative to a casing. In addition, the method includes after aligning the alignable guidance device, holding in place or anchoring the alignable guidance device and inserting a casing milling tool having a microturbine attached to coiled tubing into the pre-contoured tube. The method may also include cutting a hole in the in-situ casing with the microturbine and releasing the microturbine from the coiled tubing. Also, the method may include cementing through the coiled tubing.

Alignable guidance device for casing entry milling and cementing operations

A downhole alignment tool includes a guidance device, the guidance device having a center and a reference mark and a downhole sensor assembly, the downhole sensor assembly attached or positioned within the guidance device. The guidance device includes electronics, the electronics including an oscillator, an evaluation unit, and an output stage. A sensor detects a signal supplied to the evaluation unit for determining orientation of the reference mark relative to an object, such as another wellbore or casing.

Downhole sensor assembly for alignment measurement

A vibration damping device for use with a downhole tool having a tool axis may comprise a device housing mechanically coupled to the downhole tool, wherein the device housing defines a receptacle having a volume and an inner surface; an inertia element movably supported in the receptacle and having a volume, a mass, and a non-zero moment of inertia about the tool axis; wherein the inertia element volume is greater than the receptacle volume and an interstitial volume is defined between the inertia element and the receptacle, and wherein the interstitial volume is occupied by a fluid or an elastomer. The device may include a longitudinal bearing and/or a radial bearing between the inertia element and the receptacle. The device may also include a pressure compensation device in fluid communication with the receptacle and positioned within or an integral part of the device housing.

Method and apparatus for damping/absorbing rotational vibrations/oscillations

A vibration damping device for use with a downhole tool having a tool axis and a drill string component (DSC), may comprise an inertia ring rotatably mounted on the DSC and including at least one cutout defining a chamber therein such that the DSC forms an end wall of the chamber, and a leaf spring disposed in the chamber, the leaf spring having first and second spring ends, the first end being attached to the inertia ring or the DSC such that relative rotation between the inertia ring and the DSC distorts the leaf spring. The second spring end may engage the other of the inertia ring or the DSC. A fluid may be included in the chamber and the spring may divide the chamber into two portions, so that relative rotation between the inertia ring and the DSC distorts the leaf spring and varies the volumes of the portions.

A bottomhole assembly (BHA) coupled to a drill string includes one or more controllers, and a hole enlargement device that selectively enlarges the diameter of the wellbore formed by the drill bit. The hole enlargement device includes an actuation unit that may move extendable cutting elements of the hole enlargement device between a radially extended position and a radially retracted position. The actuation unit may be responsive to a signal that is transmitted from a downhole and/or a surface location. The hole enlargement device may also include one or more position sensors that transmit a position signal indicative of a radial position of the cutting elements. In an illustrative operating mode, one or more operating parameters of the hole enlargement device may be adjusted based on one or more measured parameters. This adjustment may be done in a closed-loop or automated fashion and/or by human personnel.

Hole enlargement drilling device and methods for using same

A fluid flow control apparatus includes a biasing member applying a biasing force to a closure member, and a sealing member receiving the closure member. A dampener operatively connected to the closure member resists a force applied to the closure member. A fluid seal is formed when the biasing member presses the closure member against the sealing member. The closure member and sealing member may cooperate to control fluid flow along a fluid conduit formed in a wellbore tubular. The apparatus may include an actuator that controls the force applied to the closure member. The actuator may adjust the biasing force, and/or the dampening force. Also, a controller control the actuator may be responsive to a signal generated at a surface location, a downhole location, and/or a signal generated by a sensor.

Flow control device and methods for using same

A bottom hole assembly (BHA) coupled to a drill string includes a steering device, one or more controllers, and a hole enlargement device that selectively enlarges the diameter of the wellbore formed by the drill bit. In an automated drilling mode, the controller controls drilling direction by issuing instructions to the steering device. In one arrangement, the hole enlargement device is integrated into a shaft of a drilling motor that rotates the drill bit. The hole enlargement device includes an actuation unit and an electronics package that cooperate to translate extendable cutting elements between a radially extended position and a radially retracted position. The electronics package may be responsive to a signal that is transmitted from a downhole and/or a surface location. The hole enlargement device may also include one or more position sensors that transmit a position signal indicative of a radial position of the cutting elements.

Automated steerable hole enlargement drilling device and methods

A bottomhole assembly (BHA) coupled to a drill string includes one or more controllers, and a hole enlargement device that selectively enlarges the diameter of the wellbore formed by the drill bit. This disclosure, in one aspect, provides an apparatus for use in a wellbore that includes a member having an encoded magnetic field and a sensor proximate the encoded magnetic field that measures a change in the magnetic field due to a change in the load on the member. In another aspect, a method for measuring loads on a downhole tool is provided that comprises inducing an encoded magnetic field along a section of a member of the tool and detecting a change in the magnetic field due to a load on the member when the tool is in the wellbore.

Apparatus and methods for estimating loads and movements of members downhole

The present invention provides a drilling assembly for drilling deviated wellbores. The drilling assembly includes a drill bit at the lower end of the drilling assembly. A drilling motor provides the rotary power to the drill bit. A bearing assembly of the drilling motor provides lateral and axial support to the drill shaft connected to the drill bit. A steering device is integrated into drilling motor assembly. The steering device contains a plurality of force application members disposed at an outer surface of the drilling motor assembly. Each force application member is adapted to move between a normal position and a radially extended position to exert force on the wellbore interior when in extended position. A power unit in the housing provides pressurized fluid to the force application members. A control device for independently operating each of the force application members is disposed in the drilling motor assembly. A control circuit or unit independently controls the operation of the control device to independently control each force application member. For short radius drilling, a knuckle joint is disposed uphole of the steering device to provide a bend in the drilling assembly. During drilling of a wellbore, the force application members are operated to adjust the force on the wellbore to drill the wellbore in the desired direction.

Drilling assembly with a steering device for coiled-tubing operations

The present invention provides a drilling assembly for drilling deviated wellbores. The drilling assembly includes a drill bit at the lower end of the drilling assembly. A drilling motor provides the rotary power to the drill bit. A bearing assembly of the drilling motor provides lateral and axial support to the drill shaft connected to the drill bit. A drilling assembly for drilling deviated wellbores includes a drill bit and a drilling motor that provides rotary power to the drill bit. A steering device integrated into drilling motor assembly contains a plurality of force application members. In one embodiment, each force application member is adapted to exert an adjustable amount of force on the wellbore interior. A separate or common power unit at or uphole of the drilling motor provides power to the force application members. A control device and control circuit can cooperate to independently operate each of the force application members. An inductive transmission device can be used to transmit electrical signals and/or power between rotating and non-rotating section of the drilling motor. During drilling of a wellbore, the force application members are operated to adjust the force on the wellbore to drill the wellbore in the desired direction.
