A multistep process for the selective production of an oligomer oil having predetermined properties in which the first step involves the polymerization of a feedstock containing one or more C to C 1-olefins in the presence of a catalyst comprising a bulky ligand transition metal catalyst and in which a subsequent step involves the olgiomerization of at least a preselected fraction of the product of the first step.

Oligomer oils and their manufacture

Vinylidene olefin can be formed in good yield in much shorter reaction periods than found critical heretofore. The process involves dimerizing vinyl olefin with at least one trialkylaluminum compound as the sole catalyst component charged to the reaction vessel. These materials are charged to the reactor so that it contains in the range of 0.001 to 0.05 mol of trialkylaluminum per mol of the initial vinyl olefin. The reaction is performed at a temperature in the range of over 140.degree. C. and below 172.degree. C. for a period of time in the range of 1 to 24 hours sufficient to convert at least 10% by weight of the initial vinyl olefin to a different product with at least 80 wt % vinylidene dimer selectivity.

Production of vinylidene olefins

Novel fluid mixtures of specified hydrocarbons meeting an array of structural criteria are described. Linear hydrocarbons having terminal double bonds and internal segments of specified differing chain lengths separated by one or more carbon atom(s) each of which has a methylidene substituent make up one group of such compounds. Another group is alkenyl end-capped compounds of the first group. Third and fourth groups are products formed by hydrogenation of the first and second groups, respectively. The products, whether end-capped or not, and whether hydrogenated or not, have desirable lubricating properties such as suitably low pour points and/or low NOACK volatility and/or very high viscosity index and thus can be used as base oils or as components in formulating lubricants.

This invention provides an improved process for the preparation of an aluminum alkyl chain growth product by the chain growth reaction of alpha-olefins on aluminum alkyl, the improvement comprising catalyzing the chain growth reaction that is a partially oxidized aluminum alkyl.

A synthetic oil is made by a process comprising (a) isomerizing at least a portion of a vinylidene olefin feed to form an intermediate which contains tri-substituted olefin and (b) reacting said intermediate and at least one vinyl olefin in the presence of a catalyst to form a synthetic oil which comprises a co-dimer of said vinylidene olefin and said vinyl olefin.

Polyimide foam of desired density is produced by adding to a polyimide precursor comprising carboxylic and diamine components at least one foam-enhancing polar, protic additive of the formula ROH, where R is hydrogen, or C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 linear or branched alkyl or cycloalkyl, unsubstituted or substituted with halo, aryl, alkoxy or hydroxy, and heating the resultant slurry to a temperature that does not exceed about 105.degree. Method for producing polyimide foam of desired density

Described are ways of improving the yields of specification grade polyimide foam on a consistent basis from one run to the next, by use of improved microwave-based foaming processes. In one such process, prior to the application of the microwave radiation, the body of polyimide precursor is compressed at a pressure that will reduce the bulk volume of the precursor and heated to a temperature below that at which any substantial foaming occurs. to accomplish the foaming, one further embodiment of the invention employs microwave radiation directed upon the top, sides and ends of the body of above-treated polyimide precursor and of the foam structure as it is developing maintaining the developing foam under a substantially vapor-impermeable microwave compatible shroud. The extent to which the microwave radiation impinges upwardly into the bottom of said body and said foam structure is curtailed, preferably by means of a metallic shield located below the precursor and developing foam structure.

Production of foamed polymer structures
