This invention provides water-based compositions, particularly coating, ink, adhesive, fountain solution and agricultural compositions, manifesting reduced equilibrium and dynamic surface tension by the incorporation of a surface tension reducing amount of a mixture of a non-fluorinated anionic compound and a non-fluorinated weak base cationic compound, the mixture demonstrating a dynamic surface tension (DST) which is less than the DST of the individual anionic and cationic compounds and less than 45 dynes/cm, at a concentration of &#x2266;5 wt % in water at 23&#xb0; C. and 20 bubbles/second or less than 40 dynes/cm at a concentration of &#x2266;0.03M in water at 23&#xb0; C. and 0.1 bubbles/second according to the maximum-bubble pressure method.

Cationic-anionic blends for dynamic surface tension reduction

Aqueous based emulsion copolymers containing vinyl ethylene carbonate, vinyl acetate, and one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and aqueous based poly(vinyl alcohol)-containing emulsion copolymers formed by emulsion copolymerization of vinyl ethylene carbonate, vinyl acetate, and optionally one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol). These emulsion copolymers can be used in a variety of applications such as adhesives and coatings.

Water based emulsion copolymers incorporating vinyl ethylene carbonate

The present invention provides for the production of stable aqueous dispersions of vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers, preferably at high solids, i.e., greater than 65 wt %, preferably >70% which are useful as adhesives. The vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer is comprised of polymerized units of vinyl acetate and ethylene in approximately 60-95 wt % and 5-40 wt % respectively. The copolymers are prepared by the emulsion copolymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of (1) a poly(vinyl alcohol) which is 75-99&plus;mole % hydrolyzed and has an average degree of polymerization ranging from 100-2200 and (2) a polyethylene glycol having a number average molecular weight of from 200 to 20,000.

This invention relates to improved vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymers emulsions polymerized in the presence of colloidal, nonionic, water dispersible polyurethanes. The improvement resides in polymerizing the vinyl acetate and ethylene in the presence of a costabilizer comprised of the colloidal, nonionic, water dispersible polyurethanes and a polyoxyethylene-polyalkylene glycol, a particularly polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene glycols.

This invention relates to improved vinyl acetate-based polymers which are formed by emulsion polymerizing vinyl acetate and other comonomers under conditions of free radical polymerization. The improvement resides in the stabilizer system, the stabilizer being a condensation product of a polyol having a weight average molecular weight of from 500 to 10,000 reacted with a diepoxide. An example is the reaction product of polyethylene glycol and the diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A.

Heterogeneous polymer mixtures comprising a polymer in liquid or supercritical CO.sub.2 are stabilized by employing a poly(propylene oxide) or poly(butylene oxide) based surfactant. These surfactants are especially well suited for stabilizing heterogeneous polymer mixtures formed by micronizing techniques as well as by precipitation of a compressed fluid antisolvent applications.

Poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s provide hydrolytic, thermal and oxidative stability. These materials have T.sub.g s ranging from about 190.degree.-280.degree. C., and are more self-extinguishing than other engineering thermoplastics tested when burned due to the presence of phosphorus in a substantial amount of char. Moreover, phosphorus presence played a major role in resisting aggressive oxygen plasma environments by forming a highly oxidized, non-volatile phosphorus containing surface layer.

Polymers containing the phosphine oxide moiety are identified as being particularly useful in applications where resistance to atomic oxygen etching is required and in applications where second order nonlinear optical effects will be utilized. Particularly preferred polymers for these two applications include poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide)s (PEPOS), and novel PEPOS which include phenolphthalein sub-units and derivatives thereof have been prepared.
