A surgical manipulator linkage assembly may comprise a linkage arm that includes a first pulley and a second pulley. Each of the first pulley and the second pulley comprise a first drive track and a second drive track. The first drive track and the second drive track are substantially co-planar, and the first drive track extends at least partially around the second drive track. The linkage arm also includes a first drive member section extending between the first drive tracks of the first pulley and the second pulley. The linkage arm also includes a second drive member section extending between the second drive tracks of the first pulley and the second pulley. The first drive member section is wound around the first pulley in a first tensile direction and the second drive member section is wound around the first pulley in a opposite second tensile direction.

Systems and methods for a compact remote center manipulator

A catheter system comprises an elongate flexible catheter and a support structure mounted on the catheter. The support structure comprises a first alignment feature and a second alignment feature. The first alignment feature is configured to mate with a first sensor component and the second alignment feature configured to mate with a second sensor component. When the system further comprises a first sensor component mated with the first alignment feature and a second sensor component mated with the second alignment feature, the first sensor component is fixed relative to the second sensor component in at least one degree of freedom at the support structure by the first and second alignment features.

Systems and methods for configuring components in a minimally invasive instrument

An apparatus for guiding a flexible instrument includes a first plurality of linkages forming a first side of a channel of a support assembly and a second plurality of linkages forming a second side opposite the first side. In an elongated configuration, each linkage of the first plurality of linkages is interlocked between two adjacent linkages of the second plurality of linkages. Each linkage of the first plurality of linkages is hingedly coupled to an adjacent linkage of the first plurality by a bridging element that maintains a spacing between each linkage of the first plurality of linkages and each respective adjacent linkage. The support assembly transitions from the elongated configuration to a separated configuration as the support assembly is advanced along a longitudinal axis defined by the channel. In the separated configuration, each linkage of the first plurality of linkages is unlocked from between the two adjacent linkages.

Variable-length guide apparatus for delivery of a flexible instrument and methods of use

A medical system may comprise a catheter that includes an elongate body and a main lumen extending longitudinally through the elongate body. The medical system may also comprise a vision probe that includes a tube extendable through the main lumen of the catheter and comprising a flexible body having an outermost wall and an innermost wall, the innermost wall defining a central lumen. The flexible body contains a plurality of channels formed within the flexible body of the tube and separated from the central lumen by the innermost wall. The plurality of channels includes oblong channels for irrigation and suction and auxiliary channels. The oblong channels have concentric arc shaped surfaces forming an arcuate channel cross-section. The auxiliary channels have a different shape than the one or more oblong channels. The vision probe also includes an imaging system and illumination fibers running through respective auxiliary channels in the tube.

Catheter sensor systems

A medical apparatus for guiding an elongated flexible instrument includes an elongated support assembly having a longitudinal axis. The elongated support assembly is adapted to laterally receive into engagement and longitudinally support the elongated flexible instrument. The elongated support assembly includes a guide channel configured to laterally receive the elongated flexible instrument, a fastener configured to laterally receive a mating fastener component of the elongated flexible instrument, or an undulated lateral opening extending longitudinally along the elongated support assembly.

Guide apparatus for delivery of a flexible instrument and methods of use

A method for operating a medical device includes measuring a configuration of a tube, receiving a desired configuration of the tube, determining an actuation input to bend the tube to the desired configuration, and transmitting the actuation input to at least one force transmission element that is actuatable to alter the tube between a flexible state and a stiffened state. Altering the tube from the flexible state to the stiffened state includes simultaneously applying first and second tension forces to first and second force transmission elements, respectively, to compress and shorten a length of the tube. The method further includes receiving a first command to place the tube in the flexible state, reducing longitudinal compression on the tube in response to the first command, receiving a second command to place the tube in the stiffened state, and longitudinally compressing the tube in response to the second command.

Flexible surgical devices

A minimally invasive medical instrument comprises an elongate flexible body comprising a proximal portion, a distal portion, a transition portion between the proximal portion and the distal portion, and an inner sheath extending at least within the proximal portion. The inner sheath comprises a plurality of conduits extending through a wall of the inner sheath. A distal end of each conduit terminates at the transition portion. The flexible body further comprises a steerable tube extending within the distal portion. The steerable tube comprises a plurality of grooves in a wall of the steerable tube. The medical instrument further comprises at least one tendon extending from the proximal portion into the distal portion of the flexible body. In the proximal portion, the tendon extends through at least one conduit of the plurality of conduits. In the distal portion, the tendon extends within at least one groove of the plurality of grooves.

An elongate flexible instrument includes an elongate flexible instrument, an image capture instrument, and at least one heat transfer element. The elongate flexible instrument defines an internal channel. The internal channel is configured to receive a fluid from a fluid source. The image capture instrument is disposed within the internal channel in a distal portion of the elongate flexible instrument. The at least one heat transfer element is configured to transfer heat from the image capture instrument to the fluid.

Systems and methods for cleaning a minimally invasive instrument

A manipulator for a surgical instrument may comprise an instrument holder coupled with the surgical instrument and rotatable in a plane that passes through a remote center. The manipulator may also comprise a linkage assembly coupled to the instrument holder to limit motion of the instrument holder to rotation about an axis that intersects the remote center. The linkage assembly may comprise a first linkage arm comprising first and second pulleys. Each pulley may comprise first and second drive tracks which are substantially co-planar. The first linkage arm may also comprise a first drive member section extending between the first drive tracks of the pulleys and a second drive member section extending between the second drive tracks of the pulleys. The first drive member section may be wound around the first pulley in a first direction and the second drive member section may be wound around the first pulley in an opposite direction.

An axial support structure for a flexible elongate device may comprise a plurality of rigid links coupled by pin joints. Each of the plurality of rigid links may comprise a shaft, a pair of male joint connectors, and a pair of female joint connectors. Each male joint connector may comprise a male tab including an inner surface coplanar with an inner surface of the shaft and extending axially from a first end of the shaft. Each of the male joint connectors may include a pin extending radially. Each female joint connector may comprise a female tab having an outer surface coplanar with an outer surface of the shaft and extending axially from a second end of the shaft. The pair of female joint connectors may be rotated by 90 degrees relative to the pair of male joint connectors. Each female tab may define an aperture.

Axial support structure for a flexible elongate device

A robotic system comprises an instrument including proximal distal sections. The distal section comprises a steerable segment and a distal tip. The instrument also includes a main lumen and a pull wire. The system also comprises a sensor to detect a position of the distal tip of the instrument and a computing device that causes the system to record a position of a working configuration of the distal tip, determine, based on a sensor signal, a movement of the distal tip in response to insertion of a probe into the main lumen, and generate a control signal based on the determined movement. The system also comprises a drive interface connected to the pull wire at the proximal section of the instrument. The drive interface adjusts a tensioning of the pull wire based on the control signal to return the distal tip towards the working configuration recorded before the movement occurred.

An apparatus for guiding an elongated flexible instrument, includes a first plurality of linkages forming a first side of a channel of a variable-length support assembly, a second plurality of linkages forming a second side of the channel, opposite the first side, a third plurality of linkages disposed between the first and second plurality of linkages and forming a third side of the channel, and a fourth plurality of linkages disposed between the first and second plurality of linkages and forming a fourth side of the channel, opposite the third side. Each of the first, second, third, and fourth pluralities of linkages are separable from each other to transition the variable-length support assembly from an elongated configuration to a compact configuration.

A robotic system includes a manipulator assembly including at least one actuator, a control system including at least one processor configured to control the manipulator assembly, an elongate flexible catheter configured to be manipulated by the at least one actuator, and a support structure mounted on a proximal portion of the elongate flexible catheter. The support structure includes a first alignment feature and a second alignment feature. The first alignment feature is configured to mate with a first sensor such that the first sensor is maintained parallel to a longitudinal axis of the support structure. The second alignment feature is configured to mate with a second sensor such that the second sensor is maintained parallel to the longitudinal axis of the support structure and such that the second sensor is fixed relative to the first sensor in at least one degree of freedom.

A guiding apparatus comprises a plurality of support members. Each of the plurality of support members has a curved profile to resist bending in at least one direction. The guiding apparatus also comprises a retraction system coupled to the plurality of support members. The plurality of support members has an extended configuration in which the plurality of support members is positioned in an arrangement to form a channel sized to receive an instrument. The plurality of support members has a retracted configuration in which each of the plurality of support members is retracted within the retraction system as the instrument is advanced along a longitudinal axis.

A medical device includes a tube, a plurality of tensions elements, a plurality of routing members, and an actuation mechanism. The tube includes a wall with a plurality of slits oriented generally transverse to a longitudinal axis of the tube. The tube includes a proximal portion and a distal portion. The plurality of tension elements are coupled to the tube and actuatable to alter the tube between a bendable state and a rigid state. The plurality of routing members are configured to receive and route the plurality of tension elements along the tube while permitting the tube to flex and compress. The actuation mechanism is configured to simultaneously apply a first tension force to a first tension element and a second tension force equal to the first tension force to a second tension element to compress the tube, shortening a length of the tube and creating the rigid state.
