Aqueous resinous binders comprising graft copolymers, water-dilutable urethane polyols and epoxy-phosphorus acid reaction products are disclosed. The binders are useful in primer formulations for automotive applications.

A coating composition, formed of a film-forming component comprising a functional group-containing resinous binder and, optionally, a crosslinking agent having at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups of the film-forming component, wherein, when the composition is applied and cured to form a cured coating, the cured coating is characterized as having a bicontinuous morphology. Methods of making the coating composition and coatings prepared therefrom are also provided. The coating composition can provide improved physical properties, such as chip resistance, when incorporated into a coating.

Coatings with improved chip resistance and methods of making the same

A polyurethane material, the coatings prepared therefrom, and methods of making the same are provided. An anionic self-crosslinkable polyurethane material has a weight average molecular weight of less than 15,000 grams per mole and, when cured, has a toughness of at least 20 MPa according to TOUGHNESS TEST METHOD at a temperature of 25&deg; C.

Curable polyurethanes, coatings prepared therefrom, and method of making the same

A polyurethane material, the coatings prepared therefrom, and methods of making the same are provided. A polyurethane material may be formed from components comprising at least one polyisocyanate, at least one active hydrogen-containing material, at least one material having at least one primary or secondary amino group and at least one hydroxyl group, and at least one acid functional material or anhydride having a functional group reactive with isocyanate or hydroxyl groups of other components from which the polyurethane material is formed. The polyurethane can provide improved physical properties, such as chip resistance, when incorporated into a coating composition.

Disclosed is a radiation curable composition which includes: (a) an unsaturated ester compound, and (b) a pulverizable vinyl ether compound. The unsaturated ester compound is characterized as having a plurality of unsaturated ester groups per molecule. The pulverizable vinyl ether compound is characterized as including at least one of the following: (a) a compound having an average of greater than 1.0 reactive vinyl ether groups per molecule, and (b) a vinyl ether-containing group bonded to the unsaturated ester compound such that there is an average of at least 1.0 reactive vinyl ether group per molecule. The unsaturated ester compound, the vinyl ether compound and/or a mixture thereof is treated with a reducing agent so as to decompose destabilizing agents present therein that would initiate premature polymerization of the vinyl ether compound. Accordingly, in the stabilized radiation curable coating compositions of this invention, polymerization of the vinyl ether compound is substantially avoided until blended with the unsaturated ester compound and exposed to radiation.
