In a rotary cutting tool used for milling operations, a reversible indexable cutting insert is removably secured in a cutting body. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces interconnected by a continuous peripheral surface, including three side surfaces alternating with three corner surfaces. The side and corner surfaces intersect with both end surfaces at side and corner edges, respectively, with each side edge having a major cutting edge, and each corner edge having a corner and minor cutting edge. Each major and minor cutting edge slopes away from first and second end points, respectively, of its mutually associated corner cutting edge, towards a median plane. A first imaginary straight line extending perpendicular to the median plane and intersecting any one of the corner cutting edges at any point along its length except the second end point, passes through the median plane inside an insert boundary line.

A cutting insert has a cutting edge formed at the intersection of a side surface an end surface. Recesses formed in the side surface interrupt the cutting edge at recessed cutting edge portions. Each recessed cutting edge portion has, in an end view of the cutting insert, a curved central section located between two curved side sections. The central section has a first radius of curvature and each side section has a second radius of curvature, the first radius of curvature being larger than the second radius of curvature.

A cutting insert having a pentagonal prismatic shape. A cutting region is associated with each polygonal side and is elevated with respect to a central tangential abutment surface. A primary cutting edge associated with a polygonal side is formed at the intersection of a primary rake surface and a primary relief surface. A secondary cutting edge associated with a rounded corner is formed at the intersection of a secondary rake surface and a secondary relief surface and merges with the primary cutting edge. The primary relief surface forms with the associated side abutment surface a primary relief surface angle that varies from a maximal value adjacent an upper end of the primary cutting edge to a minimal value. The secondary relief surface forms with the associated rounded corner a secondary relief surface angle that varies from a maximal value adjacent the primary cutting edge to a minimal value.

Cutting insert

A method for manufacturing a cutting insert green body having undercuts includes providing a die cavity formed in closed top and bottom dies; closing a bottom of the die cavity by a bottom punch accommodated in a punch tunnel formed in the bottom die; filling the die cavity with a pre-determined amount of sinterable powder; moving a top punch towards the die cavity through a punch tunnel formed in the top die; compacting the powder by urging the top and bottom punches towards each other, thereby forming the green body; and moving the top die and punch away from the bottom die and punch, thereby enabling removal of the formed green body. An apparatus for manufacturing a cutting insert green body having undercuts includes top and bottom dies which abut each other and top and bottom punches which slide in their respective dies.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing a cutting insert

An adaptor () secures a cutting head () to a tool holder () having a passage for fluid. The adaptor () has a corresponding passage () for fluid to which a nozzle () is connected for the distribution of fluid towards a cutting region () of the cutting head ().

A four-sided cutting insert has a top surface, a bottom surface, and a pair of first side surfaces connected to a pair of second side surfaces via corner surfaces. The cutting insert has a rotational axis of symmetry, a first axis extending along the first side surfaces and second axis extending along the second side surfaces. Opposite corners of the cutting insert are provided with a first pair of corner edges defined between a first edge and an associated second edge. Proximate its leading end, the first edge has a main portion which, in a top view of the insert, extends inwardly toward the first axis at a first angle. In a side view, the first edge slopes downwardly from the corner edge in the direction of the base surface. The associated second edge, in the top view of the insert, extends from the corner edge in an outward direction relative to the second axis.

Cutting tool and cutting insert

A double-sided reversible and indexable cutting insert has identical opposing first and second end faces and a peripheral side surface extending therebetween. A clamping through-bore extends between, and opens out to, the first and second end faces. The cutting insert has a median plane between the first and second end faces, and a through-bore axis extending perpendicularly through the median plane. The cutting insert also has a Y-fold rotational symmetry about the through-bore axis. The peripheral side surface has Y major side surfaces and Y minor side surfaces, each minor side surface interconnecting two adjacent major side surfaces. Each minor side surface is a section of a single cylindrical surface having a given radius, the given radius being greater than a minor side surface distance of each minor side surface from the through-bore axis.

A double-sided cutting insert, for use in a milling cutter, having two identical opposing end surfaces and two opposing identical major side surfaces with a through bore extending between, and opening out to, the major side surfaces. Major cutting edges are formed at the intersection of each major side surface with each end surface. Adjacent each major cutting edge, in each major side surface, is a primary relief surface. In each cross section of the cutting insert taken in a plane generally perpendicular to the major side surfaces, a line tangent to the primary relief surface at the major cutting edge is inclined to a median plane of the cutting insert at an acute interior angle.

Double-sided cutting insert and milling cutter

A cutting insert for mounting on a milling cutter has a generally quadrangular shape with top and bottom surfaces, a pair of opposite first side surfaces intersecting the top surface at first cutting edges and a pair of opposite second side surfaces intersecting the top surface at second edges. Each second edge has a front cutting portion oriented substantially transversely to an adjacent first cutting edge and meeting therewith via a cutting corner. Each of the first and second side surfaces has upper and lower sections adjacent respective top and bottom surfaces, which sections have leading portions adjacent their associated cutting corner and trailing portions remote therefrom. The trailing portion of the lower section of each second side surface is at least slightly inwardly depressed relative to the leading portion of the lower section and is substantially inwardly depressed relative to the associated trailing portion of the upper section of the second side surface. The trailing portions of the lower and upper sections merge via a transition surface oriented transversely thereto.

Milling cutting insert

A rotary milling cutting tool having a cutting insert having at least one cutting edge. The cutting edge has a number of successive component cutting edges with intermediate edges. The intermediate edges are located between the successive component cutting edges. The cutting insert is mounted in the cutting tool so that the successive component cutting edges of the insert overlap during a milling operation. The successive component cutting edges being arranged on a curved envelope defined by the rotation of a generator about the rotational axis of the rotary milling cutting tool.
