A slotted line tunable microwave filter of the type having a metallic layer aving slot patterns thereon, and an insulating layer, the filter also including a variable bias D.C. magnetic field source, for imposing a magnetic field on a dielectric junction in the metallic layer, which may be varied to tune the filter resonant frequency. In one embodiment of the invention the slot pattern comprises a first set of slots and a second set of slots. The first set of slots comprises a first slot disposed coincident with a negative x axis and the second set of slots comprises a second slot disposed coincident with a positive x axis.

High switching speed electrically tuned microwave magnetic resonance

A fin-line waveguide device for modulating signals passing therethrough. The device comprises a fin-line waveguide including two channel members longitudinally extending in the direction of signal propagation through the device. The channel members are physically and electrically separated by a ferrite dielectric slab which is oriented in a longitudinally extending plane parallel to the electric field lines of the signal passing through the device. A magnetic field is applied to the ferrite slab to magnetically bias the slab to ferromagnetic resonance. A voltage is applied across the ferrite slab to alter the ferromagnetic resonance characteristics of the slab. The phase and amplitude of the signal passing through the waveguide are modulated in response to the applied voltage.

The invention is a magnetically tunable bandpass filter for use in the miwave regions, particularly for frequencies between 0.1-4 GHz. A magnetically tunable bandpass filter is a filter which will pass only certain frequencies from one conductor to a separate conductor depending upon the frequency band and the magnetic field applied across the filter. The tuning of the center frequency can be achieved at relatively fast electronic switch times. The center frequency is the frequency at which the most coupling exist due to the applied magnetic field. Two striplines are placed at 90.degree. relative to one another with one end of one stripline overlapping one end of the other with the overlapped ends connected to ground. A disc of ferromagnetic material is placed between the two striplines. By applying a dc magnetic field and by changing the angle of the magnetic field within the disc plane, microwave signals can either be transmitted or not from one stripline to the other at a given frequency depending upon the applied magnetic field applied and the angle of application.

High speed frequency tunable microwave filter

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) device formed by an unitary insulating, magostrictive ferrite, slab whose easy axis of magnetization is initially (prior to the application of a d.c. magnetic biasing field) perpendicular to the direction of SAW-wave propagation. For example, the easy axis of magnetization in a single-crystal lithium ferrite slab is the &lt;111&gt; axis. Therfore this axis is aligned perpendicular to the SAW wave propagation direction and parallel to the edges of the SAW device. Application of a dc magnetic field swings the magnetic moments such that they will be parallel with the SAW wave propagation. Materials useful in carrying out this invention are those which have (1) an easy axis of magnetization, (2) good insulator qualities and (3) the magnetostrictive property. A dc magnetic field is applied parallel with the SAW direction or perpendicular to the easy axis of the material in order to align the magnetic moments in the direction of the SAW wave propagation. Such alignment of the magnetic moments of the material causes a delay in propagation time of the SAW wave.

Surface acoustic wave modulator using single crystal films of lithium

A surface acoustic wave device having a thin magnetostrictive film deposi on the surface between its input and output transducers. A variable D.C. field is applied to the film to vary its characteristics and thereby correspondingly continuously vary the delay or phase shift of the surface acoustic wave.
