A band edge amplitude reduction system changes the filtering characteristics of a receiver based on the amplitude of signal(s) adjacent to an edge of the operating band of the receiver and/or of signals not under the power control of the receiver. For example, the receiver measures the power level over a bandwidth at the band edges of the operating band of the receiver. If the signals adjacent to the operating band are strong enough relative to the signal power within the operating band, overload protection circuitry changes the filtering characteristics of the receiver to improve the attenuation of the signal(s) from the adjacent band(s). In certain embodiments, the overload protection circuitry switches in filter(s) with a narrower bandwidth to attenuate the signal(s) from adjacent band(s) at the edge(s) of the operating band of the receiver, thereby preventing interference with or the overload of the receiver by signals from outside the operating band and/or not under the power control of the receiver.

Band edge amplitude reduction system and method

A technique for receiving and transmitting wireless telecommunications through use of a generic architecture is disclosed. The present invention mitigates the complexity of different transceiver operations by allowing a generic architecture to be used in a variety of situations with different channels and different telecommunications standards. An illustrative embodiment of the present invention comprises: receiving uplink analog RF signals at a base station; converting the uplink analog wide-band RF signals into IF uplink digital signals at an analog-to-digital converter; converting the IF uplink digital signals into a number of uplink channels; and demodulating selected narrow-band uplink channels from the total number of narrow-band uplink channels.

Software-defined transceiver for a wireless telecommunications system

An analog-to-digital (A/D) converter system which converts an attenuated analog input signal into a digital value and shifts the position of the digital value within the digital output depending on the attenuation of the analog input signal. For example, in response to an analog input signal which saturates a first A/D converter, a second A/D converter receives and converts an attenuated analog input signal, and the output of the second A/D converter is used to produce the more significant bits of the digital output value to convert a higher amplitude range (power or voltage level range) for the analog input signal. In another example, a level detector can detect the amplitude of the analog input signal and provide an indication of the amplitude of the analog input signal. In response, the analog input signal is attenuated and provided to an A/D converter. The A/D converter converts the attenuated analog input signal and produces a digital value as the bits of the digital output where the position of the digital value within the digital output depends on the attenuation of the analog input signal.

Method and apparatus for analog-to-digital conversion using attenuated analog signals

A wireless telecommunications system architecture is disclosed that is capable of supporting a centralized block radio architecture and of distributing the information-bearing signals from the block radio to geographically-dispersed radio heads using relatively low-cost cable (e.g., twisted-pair, etc.). In accordance with the illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a radio multiplexes, modulates, and channel codes one or more information-bearing signals and upconverts them, not to radio frequency, but to an intermediate frequency that can be transmitted over a low-cost cable. Co-located with each radio head is an upconverter that upconverts the intermediate frequency signal to radio frequency in preparation for radiation by an antenna.

Wireless telecommunications system architecture supporting block radio technology

A block radio design is disclosed that prevents the primary analog-to-digital converter from saturating and thus prevents the introduction of intermodulation products into the multi-carrier signal. The block radio comprises a strong signal suppressor that selectively suppresses any carrier signal in the multi-carrier signal before the multi-carrier signal is digitized by the analog-to-digital converter, thus preventing the possibility that the analog-to-digital converter can be saturated. Furthermore, the strong signal suppressor attenuates the stronger carrier signals without affecting the weaker carrier signals. An illustrative embodiment of the present invention comprises: a signal replicator for creating two analog representations on an incoming multi-carrier signal, a scanner that identifies the potentially problematic carrier signals in the multi-carrier signal, a resynthesizer that regenerates the potentially problematic carrier signals, and a signal combiner that subtracts the regenerated carrier signals from the original multi-carrier signal, thus creating a multi-carrier signal in which the potentially problematic carrier signals are attenuated and the weaker carrier signals are left unaffected.

Method and apparatus for strong signal suppression in multi-carrier signals

A passive fiber optic repeater bypass is provided which brings fault tolerance to repeatered fiber optic transmission systems. A fiber optic bypass provides an alternate signal path around failed repeaters. The bypass optical attenuation is set to ensure the bypass signal is sufficiently small so as not to interfere with the locally regenerated and transmitted signal, but sufficiently large to be received at the next repeater. In the event of a repeater failure, a repeater monitor disables the local laser transmitter allowing the bypass signal to be received at the next repeater.
