A distributed antenna system is provided for communicating with a plurality of base stations. The distributed antenna system includes a system controller and a master unit communicating with at least one of the plurality of base stations. A remote unit communicates over a high data rate media with the master unit and/or a downstream remote unit. Alternatively, the distributed antenna system includes a controller and a digital time/space crosspoint switch controlled by the controller. A digitizing transceiver is in communication with the digital time/space crosspoint switch. The crosspoint switch is configured to transmit and receive digital data through the digitizing transceiver.

Distributed antenna system for wireless network systems

A base station includes an antenna, a radio transceiver, an optical splitter, an optical-to-electrical converter, and a computation module. The antenna may be mounted to a tower and may be configured to receive an RF signal. The radio transceiver may be coupled to the antenna and mounted near the top of the tower. The transceiver may be configured to convert the RF signal to a baseband signal for transmission over a fiber optic link as a first optical signal. The splitter may be configured to split the first optical signal, received via the fiber optic link, into a second optical signal and a third optical signal. The optical-to-electrical converter may be configured to convert the second optical signal into an electrical digital signal including in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) data. The computation module may be configured to compute, based on the I/Q data, signal measurements for location of a mobile station.

Mobile location in a remote radio head environment

In a receiver of a transmission system in which the data transmission rate is not an integer multiple of the spacing between transmission channels, a single oscillator is used to generate both the system clock used to process the data signal as well as the mixing signal used to downconvert the received RF signal to an intermediate frequency (IF). The frequency error in the IF signal that results from mixing the RF signal at a less-than-ideal mixing frequency is compensated by selecting an appropriate mixing signal frequency applied when downconverting the IF signal to baseband. In a transmitter, the mixing signal frequency used to upconvert the outgoing baseband signal to IF is selected to pre-compensate for the frequency error resulting from upconverting the IF signal to RF using a less-than-ideal mixing frequency. In either case, the receiver/transmitter can be implemented without having to provide a dedicated reference oscillator for converting signals between RF and IF.

Frequency offset correction in transmitters having non-ideal synthesizer channel spacing

Disclosed is an apparatus for digitizing an electromagnetic input signal having frequency components within at least first and second segregated frequency bands, particularly useful in a wireless communications system. The apparatus includes a filtering circuit arrangement for passing only frequency components of the input signal substantially within the first and second frequency bands, to provide a filtered signal having a spectrum with spectral components below a predetermined power level within a frequency gap between the first and second frequency bands. An analog to digital (A/D) converter samples the filtered signal at a sampling rate sufficient to provide a digitized output signal with a frequency spectrum corresponding to that of the filtered signal and also with a replica of spectral components of one of the frequency bands appearing within the frequency gap. Preferably, the sampling rate used is less than the Nyquist sampling rate for the composite frequency band extending from the lowest to highest frequencies of the two bands. This allows a single A/D converter to be employed to sample the filtered signal, even when a large frequency gap exists between the segregated bands. A single mixer stage can then be used in conjunction with the single A/D converter in a wireless communications receiver application.
