This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and (A) a minor amount of at least one hydroxyalkyl dithiocarbamate or at least one borate thereof, wherein the dithiocarbamate is derived from an amine other than an alkyl or alkenylsuccinimide. In another aspect the invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, a hydroxyalkyl dithiocarbamate or a borate thereof, and (B) at least one sulfur compound or (C) at least one phosphorus or boron antiwear or extreme pressure agent. The invention also relates to greases, functional fluids and aqueous fluids containing the hydroxyalkyl dithiocarbamates and borates thereof. The lubricants and fluids have improved antiwear and extreme pressure properties including providing improved antiscuff protection.

A composition of matter suitable for use as a dispersant-viscosity improver for lubricating oil compositions comprises the reaction product of reactants comprising (a) an oil soluble, substantially hydrogenated, vinyl substituted aromatic-aliphatic conjugated diene block copolymer said copolymer having a number average molecular weight ranging from about 30,000 to about 300,000, grafted with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or functional derivative thereof; (b-1) at least one polyester containing at least one condensable hydroxyl group; and (b-2) at least one polyamine having at least one condensable primary or secondary amino group, and optionally, (c) at least one hydrocarbyl substituted carboxylic acid or anhydride.

Dispersant-viscosity improvers for lubricating oil compositions

This invention relates to improved grease compositions comprising a major amount of an oil based simple metal soap thickened base grease and a minor amount of at least one phosphorus and boron containing composition, said phosphorus and boron containing composition prepared by reacting a combination of (A) at least one boron compound and (B) at least one phospholipid. In one embodiment, the phosphorus and boron containing composition is present in amounts sufficient to improve the extreme pressure, antiwear and lubricity properties of the base grease. In another embodiment the phosphorus and boron containing composition is present in amounts sufficient to increase the dropping point of the base grease, as determined by ASTM procedure D-2265, by at least 20.degree. C.

Grease compositions

This invention relates to a composition prepared by reacting (A) a boron compound and (B) a phospholipid. These phospholipids are useful as lubricant additives for oil-base and water-base functional fluids. These materials act as anti-wear and/or extreme pressure agents. Further, these materials when incorporated into aqueous compositions have beneficial bacteriostatic effects, i.e., controlling bacterial growth.

A graft polymer is prepared by grafting, onto a polymeric substantially saturated hydrocarbon backbone, a free-radical polymerizable vinyl nitrogen monomer, which grafting takes place with improved efficiency in the presence of minor amounts of a volatile aliphatic hydrocarbon substituted aromatic solvent capable of free-radical hydrogen atom chain transfer. The modified hydrocarbon based polymer finds utility as an additive for lubricating oils, particularly as dispersant-viscosity improvers for engine oils.

The agent is preferably comprised of a statistical mixture of a plurality of different coupled phosphorus-containing amide compounds having the formula ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X.sup.3, independently, is O or S; wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, independently, is a hydrocarbyl, a hydrocarbyl-based oxy, the hydrocarbyl portion of which contains 6 to 22 carbon atoms, or a hydrocarbyl-based thio having from 4 to about 34 carbon atoms; wherein R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, independently, is hydrogen, or an alkyl having from 1 to about 22 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl having from about 4 to about 22 carbon atoms, or an aromatic, an alkyl-substituted aromatic or an aromatic-substituted alkyl having from 6 to about 34 carbon atoms; wherein n is 0 or 1; wherein n' is 1, 2 or 3; wherein R.sup.7 is hydrogen or an alkyl having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms; and wherein when n' is 1, R.sup.8 is selected from the group consisting of H, --ROH, --ROR, --RSR and ##STR2## and when n' is 2, R.sup.8 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR3## when n' is 3, R.sup.8 is ##STR4## wherein R is independently hydrogen or an alkyl moiety, alkylene or alkylidene containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms and R' is hydrogen or an alkyl moiety, alkylene, alkylidene or carboxyl containing 1 to 60 carbon atoms.

A load-carrying agent and a lubricating composition containing such an agent is disclosed. The agent is preferably comprised of a statistical mixture of a plurality of different coupled phosphorus-containing amide compounds having the formula ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X.sup.3, independently, is O or S; wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, independently, is a hydrocarbyl, a hydrocarbyl-based oxy, the hydrocarbyl portion of which contains 6 to 22 carbon atoms, or a hydrocarbyl-based thio having from 4 to about 34 carbon atoms; wherein R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, independently, is hydrogen, or an alkyl having from 1 to about 22 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl having from about 4 to about 22 carbon atoms, or an aromatic, an alkyl-substituted aromatic or an aromatic-substituted alkyl having from 6 to about 34 carbon atoms; wherein n is 0 or 1; wherein n' is 1, 2 or 3; wherein R.sup.7 is hydrogen or an alkyl having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms; and wherein when n' is 1, R.sup.8 is selected from the group consisting of H, --ROH, --ROR, --RSR and ##STR2## and when n' is 2, R.sup.8 is selected from the group consisting of ##STR3## --R-- and --R'-- when n' is 3, R.sup.8 is ##STR4## wherein R is independently hydrogen or an alkyl moiety, alkylene or alkylidene containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms and R' is hydrogen or an alkyl moiety, alkylene, alkylidene or carboxyl containing 1 to 60 carbon atoms.
