Pellet having an axial direction and comprising a core that extends in the axial direction and further comprising a polymer sheath applied around said core, wherein said core comprises a plurality of filaments that extend in the axial direction; said polymer sheath is at least substantially free of said filaments; said polymer sheath comprising a plurality of filler particles; said pellet comprises at least 30%, preferably at least 35%, more preferably at least 40%, and preferably at most 60%, preferably at most 50%, of filaments by weight of the total weight of said pellet. Further disclosed is a reinforced article obtained from molding a plurality of said pellets, and a method of making such a pellet.

The invention relates to a process for the production of a tape comprising a plurality of sheathed continuous multifilament strands, wherein each of the sheathed continuous multifilament strands comprises a core that extends in the longitudinal direction and a polymer sheath which intimately surrounds said core, wherein each of the cores comprises an impregnated continuous multifilament strand comprising at least one continuous glass multifilament strand, wherein the at least one continuous glass multifilament strand is impregnated with an impregnating agent, wherein the process comprises the steps of: d) providing the plurality of sheathed continuous multifilament strands, e) placing the plurality of sheathed continuous multifilament strands in parallel alignment in the longitudinal direction, f) grouping the plurality of sheathed continuous multifilament strands, wherein steps e) and f) are performed such that the sheathed continuous multifilament strand can be consolidated and g) subsequently consolidating the plurality of sheathed continuous multifilament strands to form the tape, wherein the sheathed continuous multifilament strands are prepared by the sequential steps of a) unwinding from a package the continuous glass multifilament strands, b) applying the impregnating agent to the continuous glass multifilament strands to form the impregnated continuous multifilament strands and c) applying the sheath of the thermoplastic polymer composition around the impregnated continuous multifilament strands to form the sheathed continuous multifilament strands, wherein the sheathed continuous multifilament strands of step d) are the sheathed continuous multifilament strands obtained by step c) and wherein the sheathed continuous multifilament strands of step d) are subjected to step e) without cutting.

Process for production of fiber reinforced tape

The invention relates to a tape comprising a plurality of sheathed continuous multifilament strands, wherein each of the sheathed continuous multifilament strands comprises a core that extends in the longitudinal direction and a polymer sheath which intimately surrounds said core, wherein each of the cores comprises an impregnated continuous multifilament strand comprising at least one continuous glass multifilament strand, wherein the at least one continuous glass multifilament strand is impregnated with an impregnating agent in an amount from 0.50 to 15.0 wt %, for example from 0.5 to 10.0 wt % or for example from 10.0 to 15.0 wt % based on the sheathed continuous multifilament strand, wherein the impregnating agent has a melting point of at least 20&#xb0; C. below the melting point of the thermoplastic polymer composition, has a viscosity of from 2.5 to 200 cSt at 160&#xb0; C., wherein the continuous glass multifilament strand comprises at most 2 wt % of a sizing composition based on the continuous glass multifilament strand and wherein the polymer sheath consists of a thermoplastic polymer composition, wherein the thermoplastic polymer composition comprises at least 60 wt %, for example at least 80 wt % of a thermoplastic polymer, wherein the amount of impregnated continuous multifilament strand is in the range of 10 to 70 wt % based on the sheathed continuous multifilament strands and wherein the amount of polymer sheath is in the range of 30 to 90 wt % based on the sheathed continuous multifilament strand and wherein the sum of the amount of impregnated continuous multifilament strand and the polymer sheath is 100 wt %.

Tape of a plurality of sheathed continuous multifilament strands

Method for treatment of pellets () comprising a thermoplastic polymer sheath () surrounding glass filaments (), which glass filaments are covered at least in part with an impregnating agent and extend in a longitudinal direction of the pellets, the method comprising maintaining the pellets for a period of time at an elevated temperature. The method results in an improved impregnation of glass filaments in the pellets resulting in (a) lower amounts of glass separating from the pellets when such are subjected to repetitive mechanical loads and (b) less agglomerations of glass filaments in moulded products manufactured from the pellets.

Process for producing a glass fibre-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composition

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a long glass fibre reinforced polypropylene composition. The process comprises: a) providing at least one continuous glass multifibre strand, b) applying a sheath of a polypropylene composition around said continuous glass multifibre strand so as to form a sheathed continuous glass multifibre strand, c) cooling the sheathed continuous glass multifibre strand to a cutting temperature, d) cutting the sheathed continuous glass multifibre strand into pellets using a rotary cutting tool at a cutting temperature that satisfies the following equations I, II and III_max=&#x2212;0.625&#xd7;GF+112.5&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)T_min=10&#x2003;&#x2003;(II)T_min&#x2264;T_cut&#x2264;T_max&#x2003;&#x2003;(III)wherein: T_cut is the cutting temperature, T_max is the maximum cutting temperature [&#xb0; C.], T_min is the minimum cutting temperature [&#xb0; C.], and GF is the amount of glass fibres based on the weight of the composition [wt. %].

Process for the manufacture of glass fibre reinforced pellets

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a long glass fiber reinforced polypropylene composition at a line speed of at least 6.7 m/s comprising the steps of a) providing at least one continuous glass multifiber strand, b) applying from 0.5 to 20 wt. % based on the weight of the composition of an impregnating agent to said at least one continuous multifiber strand, c) applying a sheath of a polypropylene composition around the strand obtained in step b) so as to form a sheathed continuous multifiber strand, wherein the impregnating agent contains at least 90 wt. % of microcrystalline wax based on the weight of the impregnating agent.

The invention is directed to a process for the preparation of a reinforced article which comprises the step of molding a molding composition comprising pellets into the article at an elevated temperature, wherein each of the pellets has an axial length and comprises a core and a sheath around the core, wherein the core comprises an impregnating agent and a multifilament strand comprising glass fibers each having a length substantially equal to the axial length of the pellet and substantially oriented in the axial length of the pellet, wherein the sheath comprises a thermoplastic polymer; and wherein the molding composition further comprises a filler.
