A home automation system and method are disclosed for configuring a device state including but not limited to receiving an input from the client device at the server, configuring the device state in the database at the server in accordance with the input, and sending the configured device state from the server to the client device.

A method and device for transmission line testing are provided. The method includes applying, at a customer premises device, a test signal to a transmission line coupled to the customer premises device. The method further includes measuring, at the customer premises device, a reflection of the test signal. The method also includes determining, at the customer premises device, a characteristic of the transmission line based on the reflection of the test signal. The method includes determining, at the customer premises device, whether the transmission line supports a transmission service based on the characteristic. The method further includes generating an output, at the modem device, the output indicative of whether the transmission line supports the transmission service.

Method and apparatus for transmission line testing

A method and device for transmission line testing are provided. A particular modem device includes a transmission line interface to connect to a transmission line. The modem device also includes a memory to store a plurality of transmission line tests. The modem device also includes a controller coupled to the memory and to the transmission line interface. The controller selects one or more tests of the plurality of transmission line tests from the memory. The controller also performs the selected one or more tests on the transmission line and detects an electrical characteristic of the transmission line.

An apparatus and methods for utilizing a stand-alone Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone with traditional plain old telephone service (POTS) telephone support is disclosed. A stand-alone VoIP telephone with an analog telephone adaptor supporting a plurality of external analog telephone sets and a digital Internet protocol (IP) interface to support VoIP voice data communication over a data channel is presented. The VoIP telephone is used to establish VoIP service line data connections between a VoIP telephone and a data switch to an IP network. The VoIP telephone receives an analog telephone signal from an external analog telephone and establishes a voice connection between the external analog telephone and the VoIP telephone.

Method and apparatus for stand-alone voice over internet protocol with POTS telephone support

A method includes receiving at least one performance parameters from a customer premises equipment at a controller. The method includes storing the at least one performance parameter for the customer premises equipment in a line table. The method includes determining a difference between each performance parameter and a corresponding performance standard for each performance parameter entry in the line table. The method includes adjusting a customer profile for the customer premises equipment when at least one difference indicates a violation. The method also includes removing from the line table each performance parameter entry associated with the at least one difference that indicates the violation.

Remote terminal, processor-readable medium, and method for remote adjustment of a user profile

A home automation system and method are disclosed for configuring a device state including accessing a graphical user interface (GUI) in a database at a server, sending the GUI from the server to the client device, receiving an input from the client device at the server, configuring the device state in the database at the server in accordance with the input, and sending the configured device state from the server to the client device. The client device receives a device state for configuring home automation controllable devices.

A method includes monitoring, using a customer profile monitor at a server, a customer performance parameter of customer premises equipment. The customer premises equipment includes a customer profile and is located remote from the server. The customer performance parameter is compared to a customer specific performance standard to determine a difference. The customer profile of the customer premises equipment is adjusted automatically by the server.

An apparatus and methods for utilizing a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone with a built-in VPN client is disclosed. A VoIP telephone with an internal VPN client module incorporated into the VoIP telephone establishes a VPN tunnel directly from the VoIP telephone VPN client to an IP-PBX network access point. A VPN session, established in response to keypad input from a user of the VoIP telephone, is conducted over the VPN tunnel to a remote location. In a disclosed method, a secured VoIP telephone communication link is established by receiving a request from a user of the VoIP telephone, processing the request, and sending a signal from the VoIP telephone unit's VPN client over a data interface to a remote location. After exchange of authentication messages between the VoIP telephone VPN client and a remote location's VPN server, a VPN session is established.

Method and apparatus for Voice over Internet Protocol telephony using a virtual private network

A method and apparatus for qualifying a telephone transmission line for XDSL communication services is disclosed. The system includes a modem, located at the customer premises to be connected. The modem analyzes actual signals to determine the electrical characteristics of the communication channel associated with the customer premises. The modem includes a transmitter, receiver and controller to generate test signals and receive responses. The modem then analyzes the data to generate an output value indicative of the electrical characteristics of the communication channel being tested. This output value is then displayed to a user or transmitted over the communication channel to a network. The system thereby eliminates the necessity of dispatching a technician to test the telephone line, and provides more accurate test results than those achievable at the network-side of the connection alone.

Method and apparatus for telephone line testing

A data modem aggregator system and a method of initializing a data modem is disclosed. In a particular embodiment, the data modem aggregator system includes a plurality of data ports configured to communicate data traffic. The data traffic is carried over dedicated data twisted pair lines. The data modem aggregator system further includes shared data processing resources to process the data traffic communicated over the plurality of data ports and a high-speed multiplexed output responsive to the plurality of data ports and the shared resources. In a particular embodiment, the method of initializing a data connection for a data modem includes detecting power-on of the data modem, handshaking from the data modem with a far end connection, negotiating a data rate with the far end connection, and communicating data between the data modem and the far end connection over a dedicated data twisted pair line. Each of the above steps in the initialization process is performed without receiving a dial tone and without dialing digits over a public switched telephone voice network.

Dedicated data modem system and method

A remote customer profile adaptive operating system () for use in a digital subscriber line telecommunication network () is provided. The system () includes a customer site () in communication with a remote terminal (). The customer site () has a customer profile. The remote terminal () includes a main controller () that has a customer profile monitor () that monitors at least one customer performance parameter. A comparator () compares the customer performance parameters to at least one associated customer performance standard and generates a customer difference signal. A customer profile adjuster () modifies the customer profile remotely in response to the customer difference signal. A method of performing the same is also provided.
