System and method configured to determine a direction of movement of a vehicle in response to a brake being released or in response to initiating movement of the vehicle from a stopped position along a route. The direction of movement is determined based on a selected travel direction of the vehicle, a grade of the route, and at least one of applied tractive efforts or applied braking efforts.

Vehicle control system and method

A vehicle control system determines an upper non-zero limit on deceleration of a vehicle to prevent rollback of the vehicle down a grade being traveled up on by the vehicle. The upper non-zero limit on deceleration is determined by the controller based on a payload carried by the vehicle, a speed of the vehicle, and a grade of a route being traveled upon by the vehicle. The controller is configured to monitor the deceleration of the vehicle, and to automatically prevent the deceleration of the vehicle from exceeding the upper non-zero limit by controlling one or more of a brake or a motor of the vehicle. The controller also is configured to one or more of actuate the brake or supply current to the motor of the vehicle to prevent rollback of the vehicle while the vehicle is moving up the grade at a non-zero speed.

System and method for controlling a vehicle

A braking system for a vehicle includes an electric drive system associated with a first set of wheels. The electric drive system is configured to selectively provide electric motive power to the first set of wheels of the vehicle to propel the vehicle and electric retarding to slow the vehicle. The system further includes a friction brake system associated with a second set of wheels of the vehicle, and a controller for selectively actuating the electric drive system to operate in an electric retarding mode and for selectively actuating the friction brake system. The controller is configured to transfer retarding force from the first set of wheels to the second set of wheels, and/or to determine wheel speed signal accuracies, in either case to mitigate vehicle/wheel sliding or slipping.

A control system for a vehicle includes an electric drive system associated with a first set of wheels (e.g., rear wheels) of a vehicle and a drive system control unit configured to control the electric drive system to selectively provide electric motive power to the first set of wheels to propel the vehicle and electric retarding to slow the vehicle. The system further includes a friction brake system having a first friction brake unit associated with the first set of wheels and a second friction brake unit associated with a second set of wheels (e.g., front wheels) of the vehicle. The drive system control unit is further configured, in at least one mode of operation, to independently control the first and second friction brake units to concurrently apply different levels of friction braking to the first and second sets of wheels, to reduce wear unevenness.

Braking system and method for a vehicle

A torque transmission and sealing assembly includes a ring gear having a first axial end, a second axial end opposite the first axial end, an inner surface including a plurality of teeth and an axial-facing surface at the first axial end, a barrel portion joined to the second axial end of the ring gear, and a plurality of annular, axial extending fingers integrally formed with the ring gear and extending from the axial-facing surface.

System and method for unified torque transmission and rotary sealing

A seal body for use with a torque tube includes a first portion having an attachment mechanism to releasably secure a torque tube to the first portion, and a second portion configured adjacent to the first portion. The second portion of the seal body includes a substantially uniplanar sealing surface that is orthogonal to an axis of rotation of the torque tube, and that extends across a substantially uniplanar axial end face of the torque tube.

A torque tube includes a ring gear having a first axial end, a second axial end opposite the first axial end, an inner surface including a plurality of teeth, and an outer surface with a mating portion formed adjacent to the first axial end of the ring gear. The torque tube also includes a barrel portion joined to the second axial end of the ring gear at a radial location inward from a radial location of the mating portion. The barrel portion extends axially away from the ring gear.

Torque tube, torque transfer apparatus and method

A wheel hub, for use on off-highway vehicles, includes a first flange defining a wheel axis and a second flange spaced apart from the first flange along the wheel axis. The first flange includes a generally annular attachment face generally orthogonal to the wheel axis, while the second flange includes an axially inward side confronting the attachment face. The wheel hub also includes a plurality of rungs extending from the first flange to the second flange. Torque is transferred between the first flange and the second flange via the plurality of rungs. Additionally, the wheel hub includes a lubricant retention structure associated with at least one of the first flange and the second flange at a radially inward surface thereof.

Wheel hub, assembly, and method

A wheel assembly, for use on an off-highway vehicle, includes a generally cylindrical wheel hub extending axially from a first end to a second end around an inner volume. A hub adapter is secured to the second end of the wheel hub, the hub adapter including a peripheral shoulder, which has a first shoulder surface axially facing in a direction extending from the second end towards the first end. A first wheel rim is mounted to the peripheral shoulder of the hub adapter at the first shoulder surface.

A wheel frame for a vehicle including a unitary cylindrical body having a radially inward facing surface and a radially outward facing surface surrounding a wheel axis and extending from an integrally formed mounting flange to an open hub end. The radially inward facing surface of the body including a portion adjacent the hub end of the body that is enlarged for receiving at least a portion of an electric motor assembly.

Wheel frame, assembly and method

In one embodiment, a rotor for an induction motor comprises a punching assembly, a plurality of conductive bars, and an end-ring. The plurality of conductive bars may be substantially parallel to an axis of the rotor and connected to the punching assembly at a periphery of the punching assembly. Each conductive bar includes an end connected to the end-ring. The end-ring comprises a punching side having a surface facing the punching assembly and a housing side having a surface opposite the punching surface. The end-ring may be thicker on the punching side than the housing side. In this manner, the peak end ring stresses may be reduced at higher speeds and the mean time between failures of the rotor may be increased. Alternatively, the threshold speed may be increased and the top-speed of the off-highway vehicle may be increased for a given expected mean time between failures of the rotor.
