Improved systems and methods for laboratory instrument calibration. A laboratory instrument retrieves a number of sets of past quality control parameters from a data structure. Each set includes a recovered value and a timestamp. The recovered value is equal to an output value adjusted by an initial calibration factor. The laboratory instrument determines that the number of sets is greater than a threshold and that each of the past quality control parameters has a timestamp that is within a time threshold. The laboratory instrument computes an updated calibration factor such that when the updated calibration factor is applied to a representative value of the recovered values, the representative value equals the expected recovered value. The instrument updates the data structure with the calibration factor such that the calibration factor is used in subsequent testing of patient specimens.

Automatic calibration of laboratory instruments

A method and system for classification of cells and particles in a biological sample using an automated image-based feature extraction and classification architecture. A method operates by applying a mask or series of masks to an image, extracting features from the unmasked portions of the image based on the content and location of colored pixels, selecting a subset of the extracted features, and mapping the subset of the extracted features into a classifier architecture. In a majority of cases, the first level model architecture provides an accurate identification of the cell or particle. In a minority of cases, the classification of the cell or particle requires a second level step requiring the use of numerical or categorical values from the first level in combination with a second level model.

Instances of the present technology may include a method for operating a hematology analyzer. The method may include passing a control material through a hematology analyzer. The control material may include a first cell population and a second cell population. The method may also include determining a first cell population volume measurement and a second cell population volume measurement. A first value of a first cell population distribution width and a second value of a second cell population distribution width may be calculated. The method may include comparing the first value to a first reference range. The method may also include comparing the second value to a second reference range. Furthermore, the method may include classifying an operational status of the hematology analyzer based on the comparison of the first value to the first reference range and based on the comparison of the second value to the second reference range.

Embodiments of the present invention encompass systems and methods for detecting the presence of a test pad on a test strip. Exemplary techniques involve receiving a test strip having at least one test pad, where individual test pads have a pad width with ink disposed on two ink zones at two opposing sides of the width of the pad, illuminating the at least one test pad with a light source, detecting reflected signals from the test pad, generating an image comprising of pixels of the two ink zones based on the reflected signals, detecting the presence of each of the ink zones by comparing the number of consecutive pixels against a predetermined threshold, and determining the presence of the test pad on the test strip if two ink zones are detected within the pad width.
