This invention provides a graft copolymer of at least one acrylic monomer and chlorinated natural or synthetic rubber, in which at least about 8 percent of the total weight of said graft copolymer is derived from acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or both. It also provides aqueous dispersions of such graft copolymers and coating compositions containing them.

Water dispersible acrylic modified chlorinated rubber

Stable water dispersions of relatively low molecular weight poly-(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and thermosetting coating compositions thereof with aminoplast cross-linking agents are disclosed. These coating compositions are particularly suitable for heat sensitive substrates such as hardboard, plywood plastics and paper since they are capable of rapid cure at low temperatures.

Water reducible self crosslinking epoxy ester-acrylate polymers are prepared by partially esterifying the epoxy groups of a polyepoxide with an ethylenically unsaturated fatty acid or a saturated fatty acid and copolymerizing the ester product with monoethylenically unsaturated monomers including methacrylic acid and an alkoxymethylacrylamide or alkoxymethylmethacrylamide, to afford a self crosslinking acid copolymer. This copolymer is solubilized in water with a volatile base, e.g., ammonia, trimethylamine, or dimethylethanolamine. Formulations based on these polymers are useful as metal coatings.

Self crosslinking water dispersible epoxy ester-acrylate polymers

A coating formulation comprises an oil-in-water emulsion of a solution of epoxy resin or capped epoxy resin in an alkoxy alcohol, such as 2-hexoxyethanol, as the dispersed phase, a curing agent, and a water-dispersible epoxy resin emulsifier. The emulsion is stable and has spreading and wetting properties over low energy and lubricated surfaces and aluminum, thus yielding films free from surface imperfections.

There is provided an acidic ester of a polyepoxy resin, preferably diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol, esterified with an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. The acid ester is dispersed in alcoholic solvents and water, with a volatile base and further blended with a cross-linking agent and non-ionic surfactant to afford an aqueous dispersion useful as a heat curable coating for beverage cans, coil stock, fabricated metal, and the like.

Ultraviolet curable aqueous emulsion coating compositions are provided in which the discontinuous phase of the emulsion is constituted by liquid droplets of ultraviolet curable polyethylenically unsaturated material (such as an epoxy polyacrylate dissolved in liquid monoacrylate monomer). These liquid droplets are stabilized in the emulsion by means of a polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene emulsifier which serves as a cosensitizer, especially when the photosensitizer is a phenyl ketone, such as benzophenone.
