A sealed compressor has an outer housing and a separator plate received within the outer housing. The separator plate defines a suction chamber and a discharge pressure chamber within the outer housing. A locating plate is positioned within the suction pressure chamber. The locating plate has a plurality of positioning locations for receiving separate compressor housings. The separator plate has a plurality of positioning openings for receiving the separate compressors. A plurality of compressors are each received within their own housing, and include compressor pump units. The plurality of compressors extend between the openings in the locating plate and through the openings in the separator plate. The separate compressors deliver compressed refrigerant into the discharge pressure chamber.

A valve for selectively allowing the return of oil from a discharge plenum to a suction plenum includes a passage which is selectively opened or blocked by a valve spool. The valve spool sees a pressure from a discharge pressure location upstream of a discharge check valve on one face, and a discharge pressure from a discharge plenum on an opposed face. While the compressor is running, the two pressures should be relatively equal. The face which sees the pressure from the chamber upstream of the check valve is larger than the face which sees the pressure from the discharge plenum. Thus, when the compressor is running, the valve spool is biased to a first position at which it allows oil return from the discharge plenum to the suction plenum. However, upon shutdown of the compressor, the pressure in the chamber upstream of the discharge valve drops. The valve spool will be driven to a second position at which it blocks communication for oil return.

A sealed compressor includes a cylindrical shell extending along an axis. A compressor pump unit is mounted within a housing defined by the cylindrical shell. An electric motor has an inner rotor and an outer stator. The stator has an outer peripheral surface of a first dimension. The center shell has a nominal inner diameter, greater than the first dimension of the stator. The rotor drives a driveshaft about the axis. The driveshaft is associated with the compressor pump unit. A suction port extends through the center shell to deliver a suction fluid to be compressed by the compressor pump unit. Some of the suction fluid flows into a gap defined between the nominal inner diameter of the center shell and the outer periphery of the stator. The center shell has portions deformed radially inwardly to contact the outer periphery of the stator.

Compressors are defined by two relatively moving members, which have a relative orbital movement between the two. Piezoelectric elements are associated with each of the two moving members to cause the moving members to result in the orbital movement.

A scroll compressor has a sealed housing. Within the sealed housing is a first scroll member having a first base and a first generally spiral wrap extending form the first base. A second scroll member has a second base and a second generally spiral wrap extending from the base. The wraps of the first and second scroll members interfit to define compression chambers. A motor drives the second scroll member to orbit relative to the first scroll member. A valve controls the communication of gas between the compression chambers and a discharge pressure chamber. The valve is retained within a valve chamber of the first scroll member. A valve retainer is used to keep the valve within the valve chamber. The valve retainer is attached to the first scroll member by a snap fit connection.

A method of aligning a crankcase to a non-orbiting scroll includes the steps of forming initial alignment surfaces on both the non-orbiting scroll and the crankcase. Further, when the non-orbiting scroll and the crankcase are machined, precision drilled holes are drilled into each of the two. These holes are drilled relative to datum surfaces on both the non-orbiting scroll and the crankcase. Thus, once the two have been pre-positioned, the precision drilled holes are aligned and a threaded bolt is inserted into the precision drilled holes. The threaded bolt ensures that the two will be radially positioned properly relative to each other.

A compressor diagnostic system incorporates a control which receives a plurality of data streams about various operational features of the compressor. As an example, both temperature and pressure of the suction and discharge refrigerant are taken and sent to the control. Moreover, information with regard to the power being supplied to the motor is taken and stored. All of this information is utilized at a control which compares the information to expected values and determines a fault based upon the evaluation. Moreover, in another feature of this invention, much of this data is stored, and maintained at the compressor. In the event of a compressor failure, this stored information will provide a maintenance worker with a good indication of why the compressor failed.

Low voltage electrical power is supplied to a diagnostic control device in a sealed compressor. Electrical power is tapped from a high voltage power line and transformed to low voltage power that in turn operates the diagnostic control device. The diagnostic control device and the electric voltage transforming system are housed within the sealed compressor shell, thus eliminating the need for additional openings in the compressor shell. Other low voltage devices can be powered in this way.

A scroll compressor is provided with a non-circular back pressure chamber which is still concentric about a center axis of the compressor, such as the center axis of the drive shaft. Stated another way, an inner seal and an outer seal define a back pressure chamber. The two seals are concentric, but at least one of the seals is non-circular. In this way, reduced a back pressure chamber can be provided while still allowing the amount of orbital movement necessary for the tap for communicating a compressed refrigerant to the back pressure chamber.

A low cost protective clutch member is positioned adjacent an end of the drive shaft in a scroll compressor. The device is a thin washer having a tab which is selectively driven against the housing stop when the compressor is driven in a forward direction, but is movable into a notch in the shaft when the shaft is driven in a reverse direction. The tab prevents rotation of the shaft when in the notch.

A number of improvements increase the flow of lubricant within a scroll compressor. A centrifugal oil separator is mounted on the discharge port to remove oil from the refrigerant. The oil is returned through a leak path such that the oil can easily return back to a suction pressure chamber. The leak path is preferably upstream of a check valve. Thus, at shutdown, the leak path will not allow upstream components to also equalize in pressure with the suction pressure chamber of the compressor. Further, a number of embodiments include ways of resisting flow of refrigerant through the leak path, while still allowing oil flow. A number of valve elements are described which perform this function. Alternatively, labyrinth flow paths, or positioning of the return paths such that it will be closed when the compressor is shut down are disclosed.

A system includes a motor mounted within a housing and a compressor pump unit. A single-phase PSC motor includes a switch assembly which selectively connects primary or alternate windings. During normal load operation, when maximum efficiency is desired, the switch is placed in one position, then during high load operation, when maximum torque output is needed at maximum a load point, the switch is placed in the closed position. In effect, the number of main winding turns is decreased and the motor is strengthened. As the auxiliary capacitors are also now connected in parallel, the net effect is an increase in the total auxiliary capacitance, which also serves to strengthen the motor. Another embodiment provides a switch for a three-phase WYE connected motor. In yet another embodiment, a three phase delta connected motor switch is provided.

An oil spout is drilled in the crankcase of a scroll compressor between the outer seal and the coupling. The oil spout intersects the oil return chamber to redirect a portion of the oil exiting the oil return passage to the lower surface of the orbiting scroll between the outer seal and the coupling. It is preferred that the oil spout be substantially perpendicular to and smaller in diameter than the oil return passage. The oil spout provides a continual flow of additional lubrication to the outer seal and the coupling, preventing excessive wear of the outer seal and improving overall seal reliability.
