Highly pure iron oxides are prepared by reaction of metallic iron, in the form of microspheroidal particles or of scraps or cuttings, with an agitated aqueous solution of a mono- or polycarboxylic acid with a pKa of 0.5 to 6 relative to the first carboxyl and capable of decomposing, by heating in air at 200 to 350&#xb0; C., to carbon dioxide and water, using 0.03 to 1.5 moles of acid per g-atoms of iron, a water/iron weight ration of 1 to 20, and by oxidation of the ferrous carboxilate to ferric salt, with an agent selected from oxygen, mixtures containing oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, organic peroxides and hydroperoxides.

A Fischer-Tropsch catalyst comprising iron and at least one promoter is prepared via a method which comprises the preparation of a high purity iron precursor and which uses a nominal amount of water in the catalyst production. The catalyst particles prepared with the high purity iron precursor have an essentially spherical particle shape, a relatively narrow particle size distribution range, and a high surface area.

Oxidation catalysts for used in the full oxidation to CO and H O of volatile organic compounds, such as hydrocarbons, comprising mixed oxides of copper, manganese and one or more rare-earth metals, wherein the metals can assume multiple valency states, having a percentage composition by weight, expressed as CuO, MnO and rare-earth oxides, in which the metal has the minimum value of 8-50%, 10-75% and 2-15%, respectively. The oxides are supported on inert porous inorganic oxides.

A method for denitrification of water, in which the water to be denitrified is made to flow over a porous carrier which comprises a transition metal, preferably palladium, used in an amount between 0.01 and 5% by weight on the carrier and on which denitrifying bacterial strains capable of surviving in the presence of hydrogen are made to adhere, and in which hydrogen is used as a reducing agent and the pH of the reaction is adjusted to values of 4.5 to 7.8 preferably by using carbon dioxide.

Catalysts for dehydrogenating ethylbenzene to styrene

Hydrogenation catalysts comprising metallic palladium supported on activated carbon, wherein less than 50% by weight of the palladium is comprised within a surface layer with a depth of up to 50 microns, the remainder being comprised in a layer between 50 and 400 microns deep. The catalysts can be used in particular in purifying terephthalic acid obtained by oxidation of p-xylene.

Hydrogenation catalysts

Catalysts and catalyst carriers, in the form of granules having a definite geometric form, characterized by porosity values such that at least 70% of the volume of the pores have a radius corresponding to the peak values of the porosity distribution curve. The catalysts and catalyst carriers are obtained by compression shaping, wherein the lubricant employed is applied to the molding of the chamber (external lubrication).
