A continuous fibrillated structure, formed by the abrupt pressure release of a two-phase liquid mixture of polymer and solvent at elevated temperature and pressure so as to cause the instantaneous vaporization of the solvent, is shredded by a stream of fluid directed transversely against the continuous fibrillated structure at the moment of its formation.

Process for the manufacture of discontinuous fibrils

A continuous fibrillated structure, formed by the abrupt pressure release of a two-phase liquid mixture of polymer and solvent at elevated temperature and pressure so as to cause the instantaneous vaporization of the solvent, is shredded by introducing a make-up fluid into the two-phase liquid mixture before the pressure release is complete.

Fabrication of discontinuous fibrils

Fibrils made of synthetic polymer and which are in the presence of vapors of an organic solvent are recovered in a closed chamber containing a liquid for suspending the fibrils and a gaseous atmosphere. The chamber contains means for introducing the fibrils and solvent vapors into the closed chamber, means for discharging the solvent vapors from the closed chamber, means for introducing into the closed chamber liquid for suspending the fibrils, and means for withdrawing the suspension of fibrils from the closed chamber.
